With my ‘97 GEMS I am able to lock with the fob and unlock with a spare key blade. No immobilization issues. This seems to be a unique, yes positive, issue. Thoughts as to why so that I don’t change something and screw it up?

Yes, it is a unique situation. Presumably, at some point in the past someone has done 'something' but I've no idea what. If the car is immobilised and the EKA entered in the door lock, it will need the EKA every time it is unlocked (with the key) afterwards. However, if the EKA is entered with a Nanocom, after that you can lock and unlock with the key and it won't ask for the EKA again. There's a lot of cars in this state that don't have a working fob (my red one when bought didn't have a fob at all, just a dumb key blade) and that isn't a problem until one of the door latch microswitches starts to fail. I would have thought if you then lock with the fob and unlock with the key, you would be back in the same situation of it needing the EKA. But, again, all is not straightforward, as you can only enter the EKA with a Nanocom on a BeCM with firmware V36 or later. V36 came out in mid-97 so you might have that or you might be on V35. On the earlier firmware versions, you cannot even connect to the BeCM if the car is immobilised.

The situation you have is not only unique but also insecure. If you can lock it with the fob but unlock with the key and the immobiliser is turned off, you could just as easily unlock it with a screwdriver jammed in the key slot. Turning the key is a purely mechanical thing. I'm wondering if the immobiliser is actually being turned on when you lock? I know the immobiliser and alarm are separate but both turned on and off at the same time, but when locked does the alarm LED on the top of the dashboard flash?

I would suggest you don't try to change anything in case you lose this rather useful 'feature'.

Where are you located?

Both mine have always worked like that.

True, it could be a country setting issue.

I had a 2000 Bosch 4.6 that I bought as a salvage even though it was perfect....
It did the same thing.
No matter what I tried to do to annoy it and get it to lock down and alarm, I failed.
It did not appear to have any modifications.
It just won't go into a deep sulk and refuse to start.
I checked with my friend who bought it and it is still looking good 8 years later!
Scotty (becm doctor) was active back then and he had me send it to him on his dime and he unlocked it
And tried to figure out what was going on. He was stumped. I think he cloned it but shortly after that his situation changed and he faded away......
It would be nice to know tho.

I am located in New York on Long Island. I also have a 98 that immobilizes when locked with the fob, but opened with the key.

By the way, I purchased the business from Scotty when he decided to step away. I can unlock, change settings and clone if anyone is need. Becmrepair@gmail.com.
