Here we go again ( this car is testing my patience) ..
Seems as though I have a whine from the gearbox, I'm thinking it's the transfer box as that seems to be the norm,, my question is, is it normally the viscous that go ?
If so has anyone ever replaced the bearings in one ?
This is the last thing I'm doing on this car, next problem it goes up for sale.
I've got a engine that is so quiet, the lpg injectors are noisier,
suspension that never sags,
everything works as should, ( even the heated seats)
I've done so much and still it wants to throw other problems at me,
i think this p38 should have an exorcism or something, it's definitely possessed by the p38 gremlin,,

My gearbox had had a whine in it since before I bought it. Put nearly 25k on it now with it whining ( in my possession) and it's still going ok.

On mine it must be gearbox rather than transfer case, as I swapped the tcase awhile ago for one that doesn't hand a stretched chain, and the whine was still there.

It is annoying, and I want to replace my box at some point, but I don't think it's an urgent thing if yours has just started doing it recently.

One of mine whines more than the other. Strangely enough the noisier one is the 70 000 mile new from LR one! The 130 000 mile one is whisper quiet compared to that. I just live with it, justifying it with the fact that the black car is generally very quiet (standard exhaust and tight motor) while the blue one has the stainless drainpipe exhaust etc, so it just sounds more whiny on the black one.
Until it goes bang of course!

You sure it's the gearbox Chris? When I first got mine it would whine like a London bus and that was the rear diff. If you suspect the T case, then the whine will be road speed related rather than engine speed related but a diff would also be the same. When the viscous coupling goes, the front end of the car hops and skips all over the place when pulling away at full lock so I doubt it is that if it is driving normally.
