Went to Maplins. Got the bits. Built it to spec. Looks great. Does it work? Does it shite!!!!!
Can't even get static out of it. I've tried everything and i dunno where i've gone wrong.

That's a shame :(
I managed to get the automation rule to enable and disable the hotspot as necessary:

You won't get static on dab, but you'll get a signal or nowt. Where have you put it? I'd say that it should work if you gaffer tape it to a garden cane and stick it vertically upwards above the roof of the car, otherwise all bets are off.
Tried it all over. Nowt!
The only difference in my setup is that there's an mcx connector in the mix. I bought the necessary adapter though.
A disappointing day. I did manage to update the app though so it's a much more polished interface with logos and stuff. Next step will be speaking to the local radio fitting man for advice. Probably need to go down the active antenna route.
I was going to ask you about the flow patch for the automation rule. I'll give it a go on mine. Nice one.

I found a problem with doing it this way - I can no longer turn off my WiFi.
The rule runs endlessly and is always checking for the presence of the bluetooth connection. Bluetooth connection = WiFi off and hotspot on, no bluetooth = hotspot off and WiFi on.
If I'm in an area with available WiFi networks that I can't connect to (various BT WiFi connections, other free WiFI provided by shops etc) I turn my WiFi off to stop my phone attempting to connect - as I won't be able to connect. The rule just turns the WiFi back on :(
