I've had this noise when the engine is warmed up and at idle since owning it, and it hasn't gotten any worse in the 5-6k miles I've done, but it is pretty irritating with the windows down. I haven't held back with the loud pedal either, so I would have thought if it were a bearing, by now it would have said sod it and er ceased being a bearing...

Thumped the cats - they don't seem to make a noise. From the top side with the bonnet up you can't really hear it - but you can from underneath and the sides. Soon as the revs get over 1000-1200 its gone. I don't get any knocking under load or any other unwelcome nasty sounds.

Soon as I noticed the noise back shortly after getting it, I had the sump off and gave things a wiggle - no up/down movement in any big ends, a tiny bit of lateral play.

The tinnier bit of the sound makes me think its something relatively lightweight clattering somewhere, but I've yet to work it out. Sounds about the same from both sides.

It's not a diesel... honest

Mine sounds much the same, sometimes hardly noticeable, other times it's quite loud. Before I had the engine done I called in at V8 Developments and asked them about it. They weren't sure but thought it sounded pretty terminal even though it had done it and hadn't got any worse in the 80,000 miles in my ownership I tried changing the cam followers as it seemed to be at camshaft speed and that made no difference and I concluded it was probably a liner slapping up and down even though I had no other symptoms of a loose liner. After having the engine completely rebuilt with new big ends, mains, liners, pistons, rings, cam, cam followers, cam chain, sprockets, oil pump, valves, valve guides, etc, it still does it. I've concluded it must be a rocker or shaft as they are the only bits that haven't been replaced.

Your new modded exhaust almost drowns it out anyway!
Kind of tinny- heat shields rattling maybe?
I wouldn't worry- it doesn't sound like a death rattle

From the back its a lovely sound :) I must admit... this afternoon I left it with the local indy with a list of jobs - clunks and fluids to hopefully find/fix/replace.

Had to wait for a lift home, meanwhile they (after scaring the crap out of me trying to unlock it with the wrong P38 key) moved my car about... I do love the way it sounds.

I digress. I'm relatively sure the sound is coming from within something. Heat shields are secure. The starter motor is a remanufactured unit fitted in 2015 - I somewhat wonder if the bendix is maybe rattling around. Or if the flex plate has a loose bolt or two, or a crack. I don't know.

If it's the flex plate, a few standing start sessions with the smile button pressed and flooring it will soon flush out the fault :-)
Probably not that then :P

I don't rag it about really, but it doesn't get babied everywhere either.

You need to come on the proposed road trip out here then. All wide single carriageway and the only way to get past the trucks is to use the button and 4-5,000 rpm.......

Ha, making a very nice noise in the process.

It appears one of my front calipers is sticking though... so I might want to sort that first!
