When I have blower control on HI both blowers run full speed.
When I select a lower speed setting, the right motor adjusts accordingly but the left motor stays on high speed.
I have R&R the left blower motor, separated the housing from the motor, cleaned the relay with contact cleaner and cleaned the internal components but the issue still exists.
I have noted that the relay for the left blower tends to get hotter than the one for the right motor but cant think of any reason for this. I did note a hairline crack running from one of the left relays ports to another port and, with that in mind, I swapped the entire fuse panel with another vehicles panel and the high speed only mode still exists with the left fan motor.
Questions;

  1. Would swapping the fan motor with a donors fan motor make a difference?
  2. Is this a HEVAC control issue?
  3. Thoughts or suggestions as to troubleshooting this?

It's the speed controller on the blower itself, the bit with two big power transistors on it. One of them has gone short circuit. You can replace the transistors or swap the speed controller from another blower (or just swap the whole blower).

Dang!! Gilbert! Ya beat me to it!....Do you ever sleep?
+1 on the speed controller circuit. I replaced the RH blower on mine 2 days ago. Same issue. 20 bucks from the wrecking yard for a blower
and all is well.
I was going to see if I can find an equivalent replacement transistor and re build the controller.
Seems to me there was a thread about this on the dark side....now sadly not worth the effort to search the quagmire.

Cheers for that....
Anyone have a spare speed controller they would be interested in selling?
Finding a breakers yard in the Great State of Conneticut is like finding an ashtray on a bicycle. I found one on eBay for $69 but in the interim will hold off for a few days to see if someone here would have one that would be sure to be in working order on arrival.

I've got a blower that I took out of mine as the bearing was noisy. I only kept it in case anyone needed the speed controller bit.....

Sleep?? It's only 7pm here......

Ahhhh...... Sleep......As far as forums go, my brains are still set to Hawaii time.....even after not posting from there for 5 years now. (12 hour time diff.)
It just seems you are always on line either here or there.....no matter if I was in Calif, Oz or Hawaii.
On another note, Is it just me, or has .net become P-38 Kindergarten lately?
Between "RichardG" and Escape, you ARE the forum!.........Good job!

Back to topic: I will grab a few speed controllers when I see them. Lots of pick your own type wreckers nearby!

I usually check the forums in the morning (to delete the Russian spam), and when there's nothing worth watching on TV in the evenings (which is most of the time). So it might look like I'm always here but I do have a few hours off every so often.

Yes, .net is filling up with newbies asking the same stupid questions and the odd know-it-all who need bringing down a peg or two every so often. As even RRTH hasn't put in an appearance since the revamp, someone has to slap them around a bit.

I'm bunging a speed controller in the post for James in the morning but they are always useful to have a spare.

I went thru something similar with mine a year or two ago. New motor assembly is too expensive and I had to got through a few used ones before I found a good speed control board.

Next time, I’m taking a gamble with one of these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Citroen-Xantia-Saxo-Berlingo-Xsara-AX-XM-ZX-Peugeot-106-Blower-Resistor-1986/162513190331?hash=item25d68a7dbb:g:H2AAAOSw21Rb9eV1

New. Possibly OEM Valeo brand, and way cheaper than a new motor assembly. All of the used blower motors I have work great, the bit speed control boards seem to go wonky after a bit...

Aloha Gene,
Thanks for the link, but $78.50?? Robbery!

As I was looking, I found these:

Dirt cheap!
I cannot even find a pair of transistors for 9 bucks!
Will try one soon!
Thanks!

My left hand blower has decided to die, I recall there the same as another car ? Anyone know which

I just purchased and installed the controller as described in the link by BOLT on Sept 19th above.
Took all of 30 minutes to change out. Fixed the left blower motor issue.
I would say it was the best $10 I have ever spent but that would not do justice to the time I spent in Bangkok some years ago....

Hi guys,

I have exactly the same issue as described in the original post. I'd hoped that taking the HEVAC controller out might fix it, but no such luck.

Over here in the UK I think I can probably find used fan/controllers OK, but they'll all be a bit old by now.

Can someone confirm that the "Citroen" unit will provide a suitable 'plug and play' controller - or are the whole fan/controller assemblies really identical? I think that's what I'm getting from the posts above, but just to be sure before buying something.

I've got a blower with knackered bearings but the controller is fine. I offered to send it to Bolt but he got the Citroen unit and fitted that (much cheaper and quicker than the postage from the UK). I can send it to you if you want although it might be easier to just get one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-BERLINGO-MPV-MK1-PEUGEOT-PARTNER-MK1-HEATER-BLOWER-FAN-RESISTOR-NEW/153186756109

From pictures the complete fan unit looks very similar although I wouldn't like to say they are identical without putting the two side by side.

hi,
Thanks for the offer - that's very generous indeed, but I think I'll let you hang onto that as a spare and I'll just get the Citroen one. I can find a fan and resistor for £30 so, for the extra £20 it's probably worth it as an experiment and I can report back on whether it fits or not.

The fan in my car has been running constantly with the ignition for who knows how long - hours and hours and hours even since I've had the car - so it's worth a punt to see if a new Citroen fan will go in there anyway. At least now I can buy it with a little more confidence. Thanks.

I thought I'd just update this, on the question of the Citroen fan compatibility.

Fan arrived, as did my HEVAC controller back from Martin in double-quick time. Time to get busy.

I have photos I can put up if anyone's interested, once I look into how to do that on this forum. Basically though, by cutting off one connector on the car loom, and crimping on another to fit the Citroen fan wiring, I think I could have slotted it right in with no trouble. They are from the same manufacturer and clearly share the same DNA.

In the end though, I didn't: I changed over the transistor/relay controller thing, slotted the old fan back in and..... silence! Unless I want the fan running of course, when I simpy turn it on! Brilliantly simple. Amazing no-one's ever thought of it before!

Why not use the Citroen fan? Two reasons really: the RR fan has four screws to fit the casing into the car; the Citroen just 3 - although those three are compatible and line up; and the RR fan fits into its housing using three rubber mounts. The Citroen one has four plastic leaves/springs moulded in. I'm sure they work OK, but it seemed to me that the rubber mounts would maybe do a better job of isolating fan noise/vibration from the dash. But it would probably have been entirely marginal.

I did also consider swapping the Citroen motor and 'hamster wheel' into the RR casing, but the main plug socket into the motor is sufficiently different not to make this straightforward.

Also, it only took me about 30 mins to get the fan out, so I thought that even if the RR fan does give up the ghost, it's not a big deal to go back in and swap them over.

Like I say, the end result is... silence... and it's lovely! Just a shame I can't take it for a nice long drive!

sounds like an elegant solution - it's nice when you get to put these things to bed

One of the finest sentences I've seen on a forum for many a year. Nearly lost some beer reading that one!

Thank you.
