I thought we cd have an "any ideas ?" thread to identify the random bit that you had left after reassembling your RR - or the random connector without a component etc

So here's a starter for 10. This was left over after taking the dash off and having the ducts and vents out. Clearly belongs somewhere in the HEVAC system, but where? and should I care?

I've seen a number of those shiny round things in mine too, but I don't know where they go either!

I also have dash and HeVAC out and haven't found anything of the sort, which means:

  • I have not come across it, or;
  • I have not broken it or broken anything that contains it, or
  • Somebody else before me has messed around and lost it, or forgot to put it where it goes.
    All three options are likely ... sorry can't be of help :-)

I like this thread! I hope I do NOT have anything to contribute ever! lol! :-)

The rubber think looks like something I've seen before, Something says to me the scuttle area (where the wiper mechanism sits) is where i've seen it, although thats on a Disco 2, rather than p38. That said, alot of the same bits exist on both though. Wonder if it could have been dropped in when the pollen filter was out at some point?

Tnx Brian, not impossible, it just appeared in the footwell, and so cd easily have been lurking loose in the dash for some time

If it was on the drivers side, then I believe it is usually in the face vent and is actuated to block off the crotch vent when you turn off the airflow.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the right shape/size to me.

Ah - that makes even more sense, thanks Marty. i castrated the crotch vent on this particular excursion behind the dash - but the flap must have fallen out prior to surgery. That vent is worse than useless in the English climate, and sealing up the bottom of the side vent (duct tape being used for what it was designed for) is one less point of leakage.

I neutered the crotch vent on mine too... one less leakage point as you say, and another relatively useless bit of pipe out of the way!

Might be the grommet that blanks off the outside temp sensor on the LHS. Up to 98MY the sensor was in the LH heater air intake, after that it was under the bumper as you know. Depending on when in 1998 your was built, it might be, as noted, the blanking plug for hole where the sensor was fitted.

Just a thought.

MartyUK is correct. It’s for the crotch vent and it’s normally located on the underside of the side window vent assembly. It is a louvre mechanism that when you close the airflow to side window, this flap opens and diverts the air to your bean bag area.
If it’s missing it just means that your side window vents airflow will be somewhat reduced.
Straight forward enough to reinstall as you have to remove the kick panel, the side air vent and the hose that goes from side vent to kick panel vent...
