Hi, I would look for some help from the knowledgeable members on the forum, for removing some of the trim when changing the scuttle [plenum] filter.

I took the A-pillar trim off the other day, and cleaned all the rubbish out from behind it. I noticed that the screws are quite badly corroded in the plastic nut-locks or whatever they are called. I have ordered new ones because the rubber seals behind them are not the best and I don't want to leave a place where rain water could get in later.

[A] The question that I have is - how do you take off the black trim piece that runs across the bottom of the windscreen, and sits between the scuttle panel and the windscreen.

I saw a mention of just sliding this trim sideways, after removing the A-pillar trim panel. Is this the case, and will it just slide sideways ? That seems a little too easy, just looking at the trim itself. I had a little pick at it and it does seem fairly firmly fixed. At first attempt I can't quite see how it is going to slide sideways without a lot of persuasion, which will probably result in breaking all the plastic "x" shaped clips, which as everyone probably knows are now no longer available.

Is there a trick to getting the trim piece off, un-damaged ? Does the same piece have to be sealed with RTV silicon when being put back on ?

[B] One other thing - how do you upload pictures ? I saw an answer to this before but I couldn't see how it would let me upload pictures that I have taken. The brief explanation said that I would have to put in a hosting website hyperlink, which, as far as I know, I don't have. On the "alternative" forum, under "image" one can just drop a picture from the laptop or phone and then upload the post. Maybe someone could tell me how to go about uploading an image here, so that I can make a note of how to do it, for future reference ?

I think the sliding sideways is only for the windshield upper trim. I don't remember the lower trim needing any trick to remove it.

To post pictures you need to upload then to a hosting site like imgur.com (which is the one most of us seem to use, simply open a free account) then, when you are writing a post and want to insert an image, open imgur, click on the picture, click the button on the right marked Copy under Direct Link which will highlight the link, right click and copy that highlighted link, come back here and in your post click the insert picture button and a small box pops up, right click the URL box in there and select paste, clock OK and carry on writing your post. If you want to check it, click on Preview which will show you what your post will look like and, if you are happy with it, click Reply.

Gilbert, many thanks for your really good explanation of how to include a picture. I will go the Imgur route as I think Pinterest have too many different threads and heading. I probably wouldn't be able to find my pictures on Pinterest !!!

Again, having looked through lots of pictures about removing the scuttle I think that Harv is right, and the lower trim, on the edge of the windscreen, may not have to be removed. I saw a picture [ was it from Strangerover ?] from a distance, showing the scuttle panel removed but with the windscreen lower strip and the A-pillar panel still in place.

So, to be brief [ !!! :) ] am I correct in thinking that to get at the scuttle foam filter, and pollen filters, you basically do the following:

[a] Remove wiper arms;
[b] Lift off one of the A-pillar panels;
[c] Unscrew the scuttle panel;
[c] Fit new pollen filters;
[d] Fit the new foam filter.

Is this about right ?

For pollen filters you just remove the pollen filter covers, the two long thin ones at the base of the plenum held in with a couple of self tapping screws, no need to remove anything else. They are a service item after all.

I hope that this works, uploading a couple of pictures.

I am hoping that there will be two pictures of the A-pillar after being unscrewed and cleaned out, underneath.

I had to glue on the foam rubber "block" at the very top of the panel, and then also the thin, long filler strip which runs all the way down the trim. Also, I didn't realise that the plastic [nylon] "nut-locks" were only a push fit into the bodywork.

Just edited it so the pictures show up. Not sure what you are doing wrong but it's the same as JMCL was doing originally but recently he's been getting it right.

Hi, thanks for your help.

I uploaded the pictures to Imgur, and I could look at them there. Then I clicked on the image and where the options were listed on the right hand side [view and edit post], clicked on "copy", highlighted the text in the box, right clicked on the text and "copied" the text.

Then I came back to the forum, clicked on "Image", righted clicked on the box "http://" and pasted the text into the box, and the "OK".

I wonder whether the mistake was removing all the extra text that appeared in the text line in the post after clicking on "OK". There was some text along the lines of "enter description here" or something like that, which I deleted until I just had the HTTP:// address shown.

This then appeared as a link to click on, to see the image.

OK, I see now what is wrong. I should have left all the text - "enter image description here", and " enter image tile here". Removing the text just leaves a link.

You bet! Repair to more modern VAG vehicles has become a luxury, both in terms of cost of parts and ease of labor ....

Pierre, when I made mine last time I did not glue/silicon properly the leading edge of the top seal (the rubber on the angle windscreen/door at the top of your pic), and I get an occasional drop when I open the door after it has raining, car wash, etc.
Most bothersome.

Unfortunately, along with a lot of gently humourous things from 20-odd years ago the snowflakes of 2020 can't accept a bit of a joke. The problem is a joke always has a "victim" so maybe the snowflake generation will be good enough to make jokes illegal !! So no more VW ads, no even the coffee ad with the VW and the car keys.

I saw that Netflix [I don't have any of these pay-for-tv programs] have banned Father Ted, and I assume Bottom, and many other of the old comedy programs will be binned, along with Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and The Life of Brian. Sad days ahead !

I had a look this morning, in between the rain showers, and I see that the drivers side A-pillar has been sealed up at the top, where the panel meets the edge of the roof, and the top of the windscreen, but the passenger side was just as the photo shows, there was no sealer.

There never was sealer, the rubber seal was stuck to the bodywork with a strip of double sided tape. Unfortunately, with age the rubber shrinks slightly and pulls to tape away. I've stuck it back on both my cars with Evo Stik contact adhesive.

Hi, does it keep the rain out without problems ? I was going to stick all the loose foam rubber bits with a bit of my world famous Gorilla glue but I decided to use double sided sticky tape, similar to the original tape.

I am not quite sure what is behind the drivers' side A-pillar trim, but it does look as if someone has squidged in some sealer. But definitely none on the passenger side.

Gorilla Glue is good for some things but it sets brittle so can break with movement and also expands as it sets.

Having a good chuckle about ad......Wife grazed the gate post backing out Bolt yesterday.
Left 5 grooves in the fence post....Did absolutely no damage to the rear light guards!
without them, I am sure I would be looking for a new taillight!

That's interesting to know. I didn't realise that it doesn't allow a bit of flexibility.

Usually, I do read the spec. sheets for glues, depending on what I want them for. I used to buy a lot of different Loctite adhesives, and it is fascinating to read what type is best suited to a particular job. I used to do a lot of work that involved bonding stainless steel to glass, and I had to be very specific about the type of adhesive, as it would depend on setting times, move-able times, and how well the adhesive would stand up to heat and cold. A world of it's own, adhesives !

I think that I need to go back to my main guys in Farnell, again.

I wonder if I could get some clarification [there's a good word now, I looked that up !!!] on the make up of the A-pillar and the rubber door seal.

Is this one complete item, in other words, is the rubber door seal all part of the A-pillar trim piece, or are they two separate pieces glued together ?

The reason I ask is that the rubber seal seems to have come detached from the top of the A-pillar, on the driver's side of my car. I would like to replace it, although it looks like it could have been separated to take of the A-pillar trim long before I got the vehicle.

When I looked at the RAVE manual I couldn't quite figure out which seal is required because the manual seems to show only the seals that go around the windows and the door aperture. I don't quite see which is the seal that goes down the A-pillar.

Perhaps someone could tell me the part number for the drivers' side seal, and how it is fixed to the A-pillar. Is it just a self adhesive seal stuck down the groove on the outer side of the A-pillar ?

RAVE probably won't tell you as it is a workshop manual not a parts manual. The rubber trims that go along the top of the doors and down the A pillars are:
ALR6938 - SEAL ASSY A POST / HEADER RH and
ALR6939 - SEAL ASSY A POST / HEADER LH

Most places show them as no longer available except for JLR Classic who show them as out of stock

Hi Gilbert, thanks for your information, and thanks for providing the part number, even if they are NLA !!

I have had another look at the seal, and, fortunately, it is still all in one piece. What I thought was a break in the rubber seal just where the A-pillar and the top of the door meet is actually where the self adhesive tape has become unstuck and the top 4 inches or so of the seal drops when the door is opened.

As it happens I have industrial double sided tape so I will re-attach the seal to the top of the door opening. The top of the A-pillar looks to be in good condition .
