Update ..... I've rooted the Huawei tablet but spent ages trying to access the bootloader, which, surprise, is locked. This tablet is one of the hardest to fiddle with, so I've asked Huawei for the unlock code. maybe they will send it.

All I'm trying to do is run a script that tells the tablet to start regardless of the power on state and even if its battery is dead and it has switched itself off.

Alternative is to drill a hole in the dash and fit a pin of some sort to push the power button... no thanks!

Is this of any use?

The article is a few years old and I don't know how much the Android system has changed in that time. Hopefully it can at least point you in the right direction.

Hi SpiggyTopes. I know this post is from a long time ago now but how did you get on with the install of this so it starts up the moment the external power is applied to the device? I've been searching everywhere but for the ASUS device you first mentioned.

Well, I am alos gearing towards a tablet-type device, but I think after 5 years there could be something else newer in the market ... these old posts are misleading, not from their technicality, but for their age!
When I first got the P38 I found an AVIC FT500, praised among some as the perfect fit, and it might still be, but now is a piece of ancient machinery ... good just for the museum.
There are tons of products in the market though, and choice is a difficult matter :-/

I'd be happy with an older item because I haven't found a newer item that 100% fits in that space (satnav). Most of the newer devices have a screen larger than 7", which is all the room you get. Just because something is ancient it doesn't mean it won't work properly. All I need is Bluetooth connectivity, wifi, and 32GB+ memory that is at an affordable price for me. If that means buying an older device then I will.

I used a 7" Joying android in mine. It has detachable screen, so I located the head unit under the passenger seat, and used a 100cm cable from Joying to connect the two together. Line outputs feed the door amps via 5 balancing transformers that sort out any noise & hum, plus give the required signal boost passively.

Most Chinese androids run too hot, so I also added a 12v fan using a 9V feed to keep it cooler. Mounting away from heater also helps !!

Craig, sorry if I sounded rough and don't want to be misunderstood (I am a sucker for old tech, must still be one of the few ones still with a glvoebox full of CDs), my main concern with specific apparatus is the navi/GPS functionality. The AVIC I've mentioned has discontinued support and no-one has cracked the hardware, which means no maps' update.
I mention this because I also see a lot of old posts ... but with really old stuff.
The FT-500BT does not tick all your boxes but size-wise fits great, which was the reason that prompted me to get one.

Pete (welcome?) will look into your solution ...

BTW, my DAB+ antenna is one of these hanging in the rear window. Works ok 95% of the time, but still thinking of doing an external one.
