Hi all

My P38's ABS pump suddenly stopped activating all of a sudden. So far I have swapped the two abs relays, and a new pressure switch to check if they were the problem and the pump still isn't activating. Is there a way to bench test my ABS pump before I source a good used one? Thank you!

First of all, make sure relay 17 is operating as soon as you turn the ignition on and supplying power to the pump on the Brown/Red wire. Power to relay 17 comes from Maxi fuse 3 so make sure that is good too. The pump only has two wires, power and ground so to test it, put power to the connection that would have the Brown/Red wire going to it and ground the other one (which would have had a Black wire going to it). Also check for a good ground connection on the Black wire.

Yes relay 17 is operating once I turn on the ignition. I also have a 12v feed from the red and brown wire when the ignition is switched on. Maxi fuse 3 is also intact. I will be trying to apply 12v directly on the pump tomorrow and will see what happens.

Just to give an update. I have tried applying power and ground directly to the pump. Still dead. This probably means it is the pump that is faulty, right?

As an aside, does anyone know if anyone rebuilds the ABS pumps in the UK?
I half remember ages ago it was mentioned on RR.net back in the day that there was a company in the States that supplied parts and rebuilt them.
In California I think.
It would be a small demand and there would be a liability problem I guess. They are megabucks new.

I don't know of anywhere, I think it's one of those things that need to be grabbed from any cars that are being broken. The pressure switch is the same as that used on a Saab GM900 series, so maybe the pump is the same? The Classics with ABS also use the same pump.

If it doesn't run with power applied directly to it, it's dead.

I have got a couple of spares off Ebay that I have bought over the years, usually when no one bid on them and they were dirt cheap.
One said it was an "intermittent" problem meaning the pump worked one minute then didn't. I am reluctant to test it out obviously.

Thank you. Yes I have just confirmed that the pump is dead. I think this wabco abs pump is a land rover part only. The Saab's use a similar pressure switch but uses a different pump.

I have done a bit of a search and it looks like nobody in the UK repairs them. I have tried a couple of places advertising Wabco pump rebuilds but none fix p38 pumps. The company in the States that does them is Falconworks . They are in Tucson, Arizona.
