As title. Do these pumps usually fail?

What is the best way to access this.? Looks a little awkward to get to at first glance.

It's the same type of pump as the other two so don't usually fail. The main problem with the rear washer is the non-return valve under the LH rear parcel shelf bit fails and goes non-return in both directions. I replaced mine a couple of years ago and now have the opposite problem in as much as it isn't non-return so the water drains back when it isn't being used. So I have to hold the button in for about 4 wipes before any water comes out.

there is no sound from my pump therefore I guess it must be the pump that has failed or wiring to it. I don’t believe there is a separate fuse for that pump, is there?

Looks like the pumps are on the washer bottle. Looks like a pain to get to, any tips?

According to the book, you are supposed to remove the front bumper to get to them but you can undo the bolts that hold the washer bottle in place, pull it back a bit so you can get to the pumps.

Pumps are all the same, the rear was one is the one nearest the outside of the car with a black plug.

With some dexterity you can get at it if you remove the fog lamp ... a lot of dexterity! :-)

Bumper removal is 10 mins max, 5 on a good day. Helps to have an extra set of hands for the weight though.

I just did this on my "new" one....double fail - motor and non return valve. The NRV was completely blocked, so I suspect that went first, and then killed the pump. You can remove the fog lamp without too much drama, no need to remove the front bumper, but as Marshall says bumper removal is not that big a deal (if the bumper is not rusted on and the bolt heads are not rusted to hell). After the fog lamp is off, find yourself a small bore tube and bucket. Then - without removing any of the pumps... identify the dead rear one (it may not be where you think it should be, but probably outside left), and remove the pipe on it, stick your finger over the end and then stick your tube on it. Go make a cup of tea. The whole reservoir will drain without any fuss...remove pump (push fit) and multiplug, and then reconnect. For the NRV you need to lift the LH deck in the boot space and look around the area of the rear light cluster... you shd see the little sucker in there as it rises up inside the D pillar...you might need to use the little door for changing the light bulbs for extra access...
You get bonus points if you avoid getting any screen wash down your sleeve

Removing the front bumper is quicker and easier than removing the fog light - the upper two locating screws on the fog light take some getting at and, if rusted, will prove difficult and time consuming. Two bolts, two clips (reach up inside the wheel arch liner and flick them up), two fog light connectors and vent tubes and off she slides which gives full access to the pumps, the washer tubes and the wiring/connectors.. No need to drain the reservoir, just a swift dexterous swap of the pump (push fit) and tube with minimal fluid loss but you will get your sleeves wet so roll ‘em up. You can also catch most of the ‘leaked’ fluid for reuse with a handily placed bowl of some sort. Connector swap is then also simple. Liberally grease the bumper clips and their plastic locating pads inside the bumper, plenty of anti seize on the bumper bolts when refitting and you’re well prepared for the next time.

The whole process takes less than 15 minutes.
