Hi All
Not been on for a while hope you are all ok.
My problem,
I was driving along the A19 at about 70mph, the engine suddenly seamed to surge and rev-up then it stopped. I had not move accelerator. I coasted to the side and luckily there was a parking bay so in I went.
I had nanocom in car so I plugged in and no faults other than the over fuel pressure thing you get when it’s been chipped which is always there even when it’s running correctly but she would not start. So green flag home 100 miles.
When I got home and she was off the truck she started first time and ran for about 5 mins then stopped and again would not start until about 30 mins later.
New filters and oil change and she will run sometimes for an hour but sometimes only 5 mins then stops but always starts again after about 30 mins.
Hope someone can give me any idea what to try next as don’t trust her anymore and I should.

Does the diesel have a crank position sensor? On a V8 when they start to fail they do it when hot but will start working again once left to cool down. If it does and it is accessible, when it stops, spray it with cold water to cool it down. If it restarts immediately then that is likely the problem.

Yes I do believe the diesel has a crank sensor I will look in the morning to make sure but thanks for you quick reply

There are a few simple things you can check.
Remove the plastic cover over the injectors and using a torch, look for diesel in the injector Wells and perished leak off pipes.
Change the fuel filter, drain it first,(remove it in situ, using a strap wrench and avoid disconnecting the fuel lines as they break easily) before fitting the new filter get a receptacle to catch the fuel and place it under where the fuel filter fits, remove the fusebox cover and battery cover , remove the fuel pump yellow relay front right and using a length of wire (ignition off) put one end of the wire into the nearest relay terminal(it's the one that has a different orientation to the other terminals) and the other to positive on the battery. You should, if the intake pump is good , get at least 200ml of fuel in 10 secs.
When checking the leak offs also have a good look at the wiring to number 4 injector for damage. Have a look for dampness around the fuel tank, the flow/return pipes on the intake pump corrode and cause air ingress and running problems too.

Thanks for the reply.
I will try pump flow in the morning I had already replaced leak off pipes and replaced all filters before I had the problem with her stopping and had probably done about 800 miles with new filters before she stopped on me.
Everything looks dry with no leaks.

If it stops again, carry the necessary tools/cable and jump the fuel pump relay socket terminals(ignition off) whilst observing the clear line to the fip, see if bubbles come through.

If the crank sensor fails. it will scream at about 3000 RPM, until you shut off the engine.
The diesel will start & run without the intank pump. In that case it will crank extra few times before starting and also will be sluggish beyond 80KPH.

Check the connection to 'stop solenoid' for damage and also the solenoid it self. If you have a spare one, change it and see.
Also, check with Nanocom , the ' fuel temperature' and 'fuel quantity current' value when idling (hot engine).

Eventually got round to having time to play and changed out crankshaft sensor while I was doing off side ball joints and track rod.
Now all good doesn’t miss a beat thanks for the advice Gilbertd.

It was only a wild guess and it may well have been something else that you have disturbed but, if it is now working fine, that's good. I'd run it around for a bit before deciding you've fixed it though.

I Doubt it. Crank sensor is located near the starter motor.
