Hi engine on P38 starts then instantly cuts off. I have tried the reset sequence with the key but that did not help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to state which engine for help.
Welcome to the site!
Thanks Range Rover county 4.0
If it helps, it is a 2001. When new was fuelled by gas. It has had a replacement engine and is now 3.0 v8 petrol. Thanks in advance.
Oops- 4.0 V8
Does it do it every time? Not LR, but we had a truck at work that used to do that. It was the ignition switch. Really, we need quite a bit more information to get an idea of what’s going on.
Thanks for your reply, it does do it every time.
I haven’t got much more info at the moment other than the engine does seem to start even though it is only for a couple of seconds, also there is petrol in the tank albeit it has been there for over a year.
I’ll have a look at the ignition and see if there is anything obvious. Thanks again
If it runs for longer than you are holding the key in the start position, I'd be suspecting the crank position sensor or fuel pump. You can check teh fuel pump easily enough, there is a Shrader valve on the end of the fuel rail, left hand side, at the back by the bulkhead. The fuel pump will run while the starter is turning but should continue to run once the engine starts. You could have a problem where it runs while cranking but doesn't continue once the engine has started.
Thanks I’ll try these ideas and hopefully it will run. 👍🏼
Are there any fault codes? Does it respond to throttle?
Hi, no fault codes and no response to throttle.
I am going away tomorrow so might not see any advice you give or be able to act on advice given so far by you all. I’ll pick it up when I get back. Thanks
All, been a while..Car now starts and runs ok but it is now showing a fault when I switch on "inertia switch fault", the hazard warning lights come on as I think should happen with this fault, also the rev counter seems to be switching on and off. I have checked the inertia switch, it has not been activated and looks to be ok. Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this fault
Thanks a lot.
You've got 3 wires to the inertia switch, a White/Orange Which supplies the power to it from the fuel pump relay, a White/Blue which sends that power to the fuel pump when the inertia switch isn't tripped, but when it trips that White/Blue is connected to the White/Purple which goes to the BeCM to tell it that the switch has tripped. As the BeCM will see a ground via the pump, it is that ground that it is looking for. That suggests that there is a wiring fault (or an internal fault in the inertia switch) so there is a ground on the White/Purple wire. There's no connections between the two, just a wire that goes directly to pin 2 of C1289 at the BeCM. This is a green 20 way connector on the front of the BeCM, 2nd one in from the left on the lower row.
