I've had no book symbol up for a month or two now after changing the pot on the rhs blend. Last two mornings have flagged the book up after the self test and it defaults to screen only which makes sense from a safety point I guess, I cannot change air direction.
However, after the brief journey to work and starting her up again a few hours later when coming home....no book symbol and everything is well again.
Why would a fault exist first start every morning but not on the 2nd ,3rd,4th etc of that day? Ambient temp is fairly constant so heater box 'tightness' being my first thought, seems unlikely.

It sounds like the grease on the pivots is starting to get a bit sticky. So it fails on initial start up when everything is cold but moves freely enough once the heater box has warmed up. I've found silicone oil to be the best for both softening the old grease and lubricating everything.

I did spray the blend motor pivots when I had that out with silicon spray. Never had the distribution motor out, its always the rhs blend that's given me trouble. I'll pull it to bits when I've more time and lube it up, ta.

Have a look at the pictures in this thread https://rangerovers.pub/topic/3864-no-blower-air-to-windscreen, unlike the temperature blend motors which only move one flap, the distribution motor is moving 3 so there's more bits that need lubrication.

That's very useful Ta.

Well...in good 'old p38 fashion, the fault has not reappeared since I posted!

Not sure about where you are but maybe because after a couple of colder days the weather has got warmer again? It has in my area anyway.

Shropshire, it was doing it when it was cool (5am start) and when it was hot on the same day. Stuff does play up on mine when it's cold and even stops working altogether when it's freezing like the front door interior lamp micro switches and the book pops up more frequently too when it's freezing but they all sort themselves out when cab or ambient temp rises. I'm hoping that the 2nd replacement pot on the rhs blend has finally fixed the book coming on when it's cooler.
All my book issues have been with that one until this distribution oddity. It was 6 degrees at 5am earlier this week, no book, 21 degrees midday and still no book. Maybe a foreign something got stuck in the external gear wheels and it's now fell out...dunno.
I do come across bits of crumbly headliner foam that went all over the dash top when I removed the liner for a recover occasionally.

I wouldn't know, I'm retired so 5am is the middle of the night for me. Although mine behaved itself when I went to the in-laws in Latvia in December and never saw anything higher than -3C for over a week. The only thing I used to have in the cold was mixing bits on the HEVAC display which would slowly come back as the interior warmed up. That was before I did the zebra strip though so it no longer does it.

hi, i have had similar issues with my hevac system, i tried everything that was possible trying not to have to remove the dash, wasted nearly 2 weeks trying to get the flaps to move, it was never going to happen. in the end i pulled the dash and fixed the real issue, that was the heater box had shrunk, and the flaps were so tight that nothing was going to fix it other than dismantle the box and give the shafts clearance to move. this was easy on the bench. if i was to do this job again i would remove the instrument consul (rhd) and remove the blend motors and try and move the gearing by hand using the big white gear and see how tight they are, mine were nearly impossible to move without great effort it took me 2 days to remove fix and replace the dash and i have had no problems since. when i fixed the flaps i could move all 3 flaps on the distribution side with a small flick of the finger from open to close, another sign of a tight heater box is you can hear the motors working, i have not heard mine since i done the job. just an FYI.
