My heatshields are all a bit loose and clattery having rusted around where the nuts are welded in. I was thinking about just taking the whole bloody lot off and wrapping the manifolds in exhaust wrap to keep the temperatures down. Any thoughts? Good idea, terrible idea? I'm wondering if it'll maybe quieten down some of the noise from around there too.

Shouldn't cause too many problems in our climate. Don't buy the cheap stuff though.
It does retain moisture/ condensate which can accelerate corrosion,
Ceramic coating looks much tricker though :)

I ran mine with no heat shield at all on the drivers side for about 2 years (that's about 50,000 miles for me) and nothing seemed to suffer.

Mine are held in place only by the two brass studs and one m6 bolt on the rear, they don't clatter and if so I take it off and bend it a bit so it stops.

I wrapped mine when they were off for the engnie refresh (as the the bolts ALL had to be cut off along with the brass studs!). I typically bought cheap wrap it seems as he does steam a bit on these cold mornings, but I have to say the engine compartment seems a bit cooler.

I am thinking of maybe finding some thermal gaskets thought in the Spring, just to stop too much transfer of heat to the head. I know this is an issue with eth K-Series I have, so assume it's a general issue. Although as others have said - in the UK climate it's less of an issue.

Under my Classic I had this SS exhaust and wrapped the manifolds with a special heat-resistant fabric to keep the temperature inside the exhaust. First it was a pain to wrap, especial when you reach the welded joints, second in less than 6 months they started to detoriate and come off.

Oooh, that's pretty......

My SE has the heat shields held on just at the two centre mounts, none of the fiddly little ones. The shields had obviously rotted at some point in the past and someone has screwed M8 studding into the tapped holes in the manifold with a nut to lock them in place. There's then a nut screwed onto that, a big washer, the heatshield, another washer and a nut to hold it in place. That way if it rattles against the manifold, the shield can be moved out a bit so it doesn't touch on anything. Also makes it dead easy to removed.
