Today had both cats opened to cut out....1 was empty the other did not seem blocked so now thinking centre section might be blocked ? Anyone done centre box removal ? Is it drivable noise wise with centre section taken out ?

My centre box removed itself without any assistance from me at all..... Someone, Sloth I think, has replaced the centre box with a length of pipe so is only using the tailpipe boxes for silencing. Not heard it myself but he reckons it sounds good although I'd be concerned about it droning a bit on long journeys which could start to get annoying.

I drove mine locally with a big hole in the centre box for three weeks. I thought it sounded sweet lol was disappointed when I had to renew it so as to pass the MOT.

I suppose it's always possible that the remains of the guts of the cat are blocking up the centre box. Drop it off and see what it runs like. It'll sound gorgeous with just the Y pipe although your local plod may not agree......

Gearboxes are different between 4.0 litre and diesel (ZF4HP22) and 4.6 (ZF4HP24) but no differences between GEMS and Thor and the transfer box is the same on all models and years. Avoid one from a diesel though as the torque lower down the rev range tends to stretch the chains quicker.

Or a 4.0 litre GEMS or Thor, gearbox may be different but the transfer box is the same.

That will do the job nicely and will bolt straight on in place of yours. The only difference I've seen between odd ones is the position of the output speed sensor. On some it's on the top on others on the side. Not important as the cable will reach either way.

Get the car as high as possible and have as many people as possible that can get under it. It's bloody heavy and I needed a trolley jack, a bottle jack, assorted bits of wood and two of us under there to get it back in. Second time I made up a bracket to fit to my trolley jack that bolted onto it and held it at the correct angle. If you've got a workshop with a transmission jack, you're starting from a much better place than I was.

We are lucky enough to have a ramp ! and a trans jack and air tools so should be easy as poss, just does it have to line up ? can it go into neutral while fitting ? and is it normal oil like the gearbox ? and filling etc ? I know people have done before and after the nightmare I had earlier this year I just want and easy job and it to go well, I hate saying it but 1 job i am scared of !

Hopefully not too late for you (only got back from France at 1am this morning, 1326 miles in 4 days). It needs to line up and just slots in. If you've got a couple of very long M10 bolts you can put them in a couple of the mounting holes to line it up before slotting the splined shaft in. Transfer case uses the same ATF as the gearbox and the gearbox wants to be in Neutral. Good luck.
