I have been trying to track down ESR3197 which is the back box for the early cars with single pipe. This is NLA everywhere I have tried and ESR3538 is the replacement but in some pictures of it it seems to have a straight end to the tailpipe which probably won't clear the early rear bumper cut out.
Anyone had any experience with the replacement part on an early car?

You may have to get them tailor made if they are NLA due to low demand.

Mine is a diesel but I have spoken to them on the phone in the past and they said they have all the patterns on file and will basically make one off exhausts out of any grade of stainless that you want. May cost a bit more.

I am trying to keep to as original spec as possible but SS is great if decent quality like DoubleS.

I was lucky enough to source a NOS system from front pipes back, that had the oval pipe.

As a stopgap, could you not just gently oval the round tip in a vice?

i have a similar early model. I bought a stainless "straight thru" rear box for it, used from ebay. Someone presumably had it made at a local exhaust shop. It was just a piece of 2.5" stainless pipe bent up to fit the bottom of the car. I wanted a silencer, and happened to have a small one from a BMW knocking around, so i cut the pipe, welded in the small box, and then instead of the streight outlet, i tacked on a polished stainless 45 degree turn-down tailpipe from an Audi diesel.

Looks neat and tidy and suitably OEM without being shouty. I'll snap a photo tomorrow for you if you like.

I guess the take-away is, find a local exhaust fabricator and get them to make one. I've had a few systems made (my local guy made the mid section for the rangey after it rotted away) and actually, its more or less just as cheap as buying from DoubleS, and you dont have to crawl underneath it.

Thanks Aragorn. That makes a lot of sense getting a local guy to make something up. I've still got the tattered remains of the old one so it could be a pattern.

You could open it up to copy the inards with equivalent stainless bits, cut them out, then get someone to TIG weld them all together.
