I recently bought a 95 2.5 diesel which has several problems. My current problem is the message center is frozen with mileage (kilometers) and fuel efficiency. Thats all it displays... When i get in, when i turn the key, when the engine starts. And the mileage and efficiency dont change with driving. I also, obviously, dont get warnings or any other info. Any help as to where to start would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Switch on the end of the stalk. You would normally use that to cycle through the Range, MPG, Average speed, Trip 2 and back to Trip 1. If you have it displaying anything other than Trip 1 it will continue to display that when you restart.

Thanks for the reply. I am unable to switch between any other data, so maybe my button is faulty? My biggest concern is not that it is stuck on kilometers, but that the value doesnt change. No matter how far i drive, the kilometers showing are the same.

Sounds like a fault. I would buy a secondhand instrument panel to try out. Not expensive on Ebay.
You need a diesel one. If you need a scale in kilometers, I am pretty certain the back scale can be changed over.
I have had a couple apart in the past. There are also some design variations - early and late.
However mileage in the BECM will not match then and will revert to the highest.

Thanks for the info. Is it easier/better to swap just the lcd bit or the whole panel including the gauges?

You can separate it into its component parts. The gauges, the main pcb and the message centre are all separate, so you can swap just the bit you need to. The mileage information is stored in the message centre section so if you retain that first and just swap the pcb and see if that cures the problem, you won't have any difficulty with the mileage updating. You will find the gauges with read slightly differently. There are trimmer pots along the top of the pcb for calibrating the gauges. Offset and slope for both speedo and rev counter, hence it is possible to calibrate both so they read spot on and set the mid point on the fuel and temperature gauges.
