Doing the box change today, read so many different posts on what oil to use............dex 2 or dex 3 ? Help!

The handbook says Dex III. Unless the oil looks really horrible I'd be inclined to leave it alone.

its drained mate as fitting a new box to her mine died, guy salmon the dealer said dex2 ! unreal but they never get it right !
so dex 3 for sure then

It used to be Dexron 2 that was recommended but then Dexron 3 came out and replaced it. I suspect you'd have a hard time trying to find any Dex 2 these days.

Hi everyone, hope all that helped me on the other posts see this as I do appreciative it and thats the reason for this post.

Fitted the first box same day.................everything was done right and she started and as we filled her had drive, excitement took over my girls back! then bang, oil pump blew lost drive felt sick etc etc etc, so sourced a low millage 51k box and as this was Tuesday ordered and it arrived Thursday so as I had now done it out, in, out it seemed easy ! fitted filled and no noises no drive ! now I felt sick so decided to have it diagnosed as I have bad luck but this eats it up !
So into a specialist and they came back as no internal pressure everything fitted correct so I knew I had done my part ok ( relief) and so 2 duff boxes.........so have decided to do what I should have done in the first place and have it re-conned.
They rang me yesterday to say that they had stripped it (my original box) and that it had failed because of oil circulation lack of ( I have only had since may so do not blame me ) again wrong services on a car that caused it to fail by people that use kwik fit like of places.
Anyway box being re-built now and have a good price (£1300) for it, should be back next week I will post when I do, o and that is a cost to me and I know the guys there so any problems on here give me a shout and I will introduce you to them.

Thanks again to all of you that helped, just wanted to be nice and let you know where I am at here as so many forums have people post and never let you know what the outcome was which is rude.

I am in Portsmouth so anyone near me wants a meet (after next week !.I hope !!!) needs help ( I have RSW P38 ) breaks down I am more than happy to help you always.

Hope my old girl is back next week miss her loads however it has pushed me to restore my 740i which has been sat up due to the P38, its an E38 so keep the numbers close a!

I would pay some very close attention to your transmission oil cooler and lines before you run the recon box. There's a chance they've got metal shavings and all sorts of cr@p in them that you don't want anywhere near your new one. You could also have a crushed pipe or blocked cooler.
Give them a damn good flush out and check that you've got full flow through them.

Express gearboxes are doing the job.........very good point mate I am calling in today and will remind them of that fact.

I assume that's fully fitted and warranted at that price? Ashcrofts only charge £725 exchange for a reconditioned box.

Yes mate, fully fitted 1 years warren tee oils etc so I bit the bullet ! I am keeping her anyway, spoke to yet another breaker today and heard more horror stories of L322's the gearbox place girl said that she had worked there for over 3 years and had seen 2 P38's in that time.............1 was mine so I am holding hope ! she said L322's they are seeing about 8 a month 90% rebuilds ao lets hope the P38's last us a !
And including cash and VAT !

I bet the L322s they are seeing are diesel ones. The petrol has a ZF gearbox like the P38 (5HP24 instead of our 4HP24) but the diesel one has a GM box that is scrap after 100,000 miles at best. Yet another reason not to buy a diesel......

My mate had a TD6, 130k already had box (40k) and new turbo (90k) new head unit, I had to borrow it to take my caravan to the site while mine was being MOT'd last year and he always has it full to the top so as I like to way in what I use if I borrow a car I thought easy just fill her back up............after waiting for it to raise (10 minutes driving) I collected the caravan and drove ( the tractor ) to the site, dropped it off and went to collect mine the next day, I filled it up and £25 of diesel later was left thinking..........yes it towed well, yes it is a bit noise than the V8.in the wrong way ! but in my V8 on gas I would have done a bit more running about than I did and cost about £18 on gas ! why diesel then ??? guess its a nice thought to run a diesel.........NOT!
Thing that did strike me was that even though it had only done 40k after a new turbo to me I could hear it whining all the time............I reckon new turbo on way.

The TD6 is the M57 engine from the 5 series, where it produced at most (stock, anyway) 194hp. Pretty sure LR detuned it to around 170 odd in the L322, a vehicle that weighs considerably more than a P38 too.

Turbos go because there is an oil breather that had a filter element in it, that is an overlooked service item. This blocks up and starves the turbo of oil. Fix is to replace with a later 'vortex' type breather that has no need for a typical filter element. My 5 series suffered this in the past and has had a turbo - I made sure to put the new breather on it when I got it...

Which is all a shame, because it is a good engine, but like the M51 2.5 in the P38, not really up to the job as standard in an L322.

My first Range Rover was a '93 Classic LSE, the long wheelbase version with the 4.2 litre V8, bought from a mate of a mate. It was already running on LPG and would do around 14mpg giving the cost equivalent of around 28-30 mpg. The guy I bought it from replaced it with a 2.5DHSE P38. His wife loved it as everything insignificant (heater, electric windows, central locking, heated seats, etc) worked, which after the LSE where none of the above did, was considered by her to be a great step forward. He hated it. Compared with the LSE it was totally gutless so he thrashed it mercilessly to try to get something like the same performance as he was used to. As a result, the best he ever managed was 24 mpg so not only was it slower but cost more to run too. He now runs a Land Cruiser Amazon 4.7 litre on LPG.......

scary words "landcruiser" apart from front end rot they do seem to be reliable but are lacking inside on finish to a range rover, i mean they have it just not so good in my opinion anyway and I guess most on here as they run P38's
I fitted a new front end to a 57 plate Patrol 2 weeks back and I am just saying the amount of rot is scary it was that bad the rot had gone into the rad and failed it.

If you haven't snapped your credit card in two by the time you get the gearbox in, I can thoroughly recommend the EBC Greenstuff pads and grooved/dimpled rotors. Really good pedal on mine and no fade, even when I'm being a bit of a tit on country roads.

I've got standard smooth discs and Apec pads on mine and they certainly work well. Gave them the ultimate test the other day when a National Express coach decided to pull into the outside lane in front of me when I was doing 75mph. Completely fooled the ABS system by locking all 4 wheels and leaving some pretty impressive looking black marks on the road. Wasn't it bloody big enough for you to see?

Mintex pads and standard type discs on both of mine. Lovely pedal feel- much more positive than the LR genuine ones that were fitted when I got them. Haven't had any fade or squeal issues even when emulating Morat's driving style round the lanes.
