Greetings from Yorkshire.
Recently, I made a determined effort to tackle the hot-starting problem on my high mileage (227,000 miles) 1999, diesel P38.
It's generally accepted that the 'head & rotor' assembly in a high mileage fuel injection pump wears, causing this problem. Up until recently, I believed it was a discontinued part. This is not so. The Bosch part number is 2 468 336 013. It is still a good part number. Enquiries at Merlin Diesel Systems of Preston reveal that this will be available again - through official Bosch channels - on Monday 09 March, 2026. I was quoted £331.45. Merlin's phone number is 01772 694130; ask for Steve. He's happy to discuss with individuals as well as companies, I confirmed this with him yesterday - 05 Nov 2025.

Enquiries also revealed that this part number is available elsewhere:
Darwin Diesels can get one manufactured in Italy. Lead time is 60 days. £132 + VAT to be paid up-front. Darwin Diesels - 01254 53545. Contact: Haley.
E-bay - Recambo eK of Schortens, Germany. Including P&P - 103.71 Euros (= £93.76). Off the shelf. Delivered UK in 7 days.
Now, some Chinese ones - which I didn't pursue...
Chen Chen Diesel Parts Plant, Fuzhou City - lists this part number.
Ducoo Machinery (Xiamen) Co., Ltd - lists this part number.
Fujian China Diesel Trading Co. Ltd - may have this part.

All accurate as of today's date, 06 November, 2025.
I hope this helps keep one or two P38s out of the scrapyard.
My best to all.
Paul.

Oh, and yes - I have cured my hot-starting problem. An independent diesel specialist had a new-old one on the shelf !

I don't know too much about the diesel, I steer well clear of them, but it was my understanding that a stretched cam chain was the usual cause of hot starting problems? This could be cured, for a time anyway, by rotating the injector pump to adjust the timing.

there is a bit in RAVE about what way to set the chain and pump from TDC to take the slack up to stop hot start over certain milage
