My thoughts entirely. All cars have their faults but it seems that the P38 has got a bad rap for a couple of fairly minor, easily fixed, problems. With the number of us running LPG we could probably start to dispel a few myths there too.

That one is probably a tough one... even that of the V8 being reliable is probably a challenge, since they will always slip a liner if you look at it the wrong way, and LPG is basically the catalyst for it to just randomly grenade itself.

Yes, the Rover V8 isn't the bet engine out there these days, but it also is not nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to me... so much of it all comes back to preventative maintenance though...

i misunderstood. I thought you wanted to begin your own owners club website whilst keeping the forum going on the side.

I'd say unreliable is the wrong word. A maintained p38 appears to be no more unreliable than any other car. What i would say is that due to the design and the complexity of some of the systems that were fairly new at the time, if you're not the diy type, the repair bill could be quite costly.

You wouldn't buy a Ferrari and expect to run and fix it on a shoe string budget. The price of the p38 has fallen more than enough for the average Joe to be able to afford some luxury motoring but without them factoring in that it was once a top of the range machine that still requires looking after.

P38 Unreliable? NO
P38 owner maintenance unreliable? Probably YES

Found the link just by searching for 'LPG'.

Referring to the AAA1 number plate on the Rangerover?
Since you pointed that thread out I've posted on it - I once converted a big red modded 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck to LPG, reg P11OCK lol.

The best one I've ever seen was an Aston Martin kicking about Glasgow with the registration number "V12 TOY"

Don't forget us oil burners. I'm on my 3rd engine in 4 years as it was cheaper in the end for an engine from a breakers than to get the FIP fixed! (1 x HG failure (terminal), FIP failure on number 2)Touchwood this engine is ok but I am planning a PM on the headgasket once the weather is better.
I like the forum as it is, the others are ok but lots of the photo's have vanished now. Smaller is always more personal and friendly before it goes corporate . I'm up for trips abroad, I did a round trip to Rochechouart last year, not as quick as my old XKR but just as comfortable, especially when I fixed the cruise control.

I'm up for long weekend meetups as well, and I'm gutted I missed your get togethers and fixups last year.

cheers,
Hoppy

Yeah, not interested in "going corporate". If you fancy sending me lots of money to pay for hosting, Range Rover parts or beer, PM me for my paypal address :-D

I have considered - in a later iteration of the site, once I get a few more things working properly - sticking some Google ads on for not-logged-in users so the Russian spam farmers can pay some of the hosting costs...

Another vote for dirty diesels. :)

Sounds like I need to hurry up and find time to rebuild Martys spare diesel FIP.

Hopefully my little snippets in the magazine will help nudge the P38s image in the right direction. I wouldn't recommend one to someone who isn't handy with the spanners but only because any P38 they buy from the general market will have twenty years worth of shortcuts and shody maintenance/repair to put right.

What do people think of the Billing Off Road Show? Its the last weekend of June and they are hoping to break the record of Land Rover's and Range Rovers in a single parade.

Sounds like a plan! Bloody long way south for some of us though...

Now if someone would just work up a nice little logo for the site, we could get window stickers or flags made up.

How about a silhouette of a P38 on the bumpstops with the bonnet up? :)

We should make a Range Rover pub, fit a row of hand pumps along the tailgate lip ;-)

How about a silhouette of a p38 towing each of the other land rovers!

Edit: then again the financials you can get and own a p38 for a single monthly payment of an SVR on lease!
