Hi guys, hope your all well, I'm continuing my fight to find the clunk I have when turning the steering,, island4x4 seem to list a shitpart replacement, was wondering if anyone has used one yet. I'm not happy using anything with that brand name. It's the last thing on the front to change, everything else has been swapped, never want to do another set of bearings, they were fun, didn't wanna come out,, a lot of heat and 30 ton press persuaded them, lol,, your opinions would be appreciated..

Hello Chris
A few more choices here:
I'd probably go for the Bearmach for low cost or the GKN (listed as Original Equipment) myself

I'd probably go the Bearmach one... purely on their website it has the same part number (ending in .M8) as the OE one at £90 odd quid... so chances are it's the same exact thing, just in a green box...

Are Land Rover having a laugh at £475 inc VAT for a sodding CV joint?!?

Tell me about it, when I saw the price they wanted I nearly fell over,, they seem to like to punish us for having a p38 grrr, the bearings cost nearly double what a complete hub costs for a RRS. Think ive only got brakes pipes left and that's the underside done, unless I pull the body and send chassis off for powder coating,,

I am thinking about doing my CV joint too... it does click more than it used to (well it's the only thing I can think of that still does it after pretty much the rest of the steering system has been done!! short of doing the bearings!).. And I had a look up at the symptoms of a bad CV joint, and one place said that excessive vibration can be a sign of it... and since my vibration is coming through the steering wheel (and a LOT more noticable now the steering box doesn't have a load of play in it!) I think I might give that a go as it's cheap, and I know the CV most likely needs doing... there was a click when I first got the vehicle, and I know the boot got nicked when I did the front diff 4 years ago..

I put a new boot on, but I'd done about 1500 miles before I got the chance to do it, and I don't think the new boot clips were as tight as they should be, so it's probably buggered the joint up a bit quicker... For the price of the Bearmach one, I'm willing to give it a shot... still going to try and do the VC bearing, and a wheel/tyre swap at some point too - though finding 4 wheels, with decent tyres could be interesting as most of the ones up at the workshop are a bit past it I think...

The clunk I have is really weird, should of had a look at summer camp, but it was a wee bit muddy underneath, lol, I can't pinpoint which side, it's only when turning the steering, stationary or moving.. I've changed track rod bar, drag link, all ball joints, poly bushed everything, replaced steering box, flexi coupling upto steering column, front bearings, I'm crossing my fingers that it is a cv joint, if not I'm at a loss

But at least you'll know there's nothing worn out!!

Have you tried taking the drag link and track rod off, and seeing if you can move each part by hand to see what the clunk is?

Will find out today, it's going up on blocks, and not coming off till I find the clunk,

Well I changed both cv joints and took for a spin , looks like I've solved the problem at last, did find that the stabiliser bush ( think it's called panhard, correct me if I'm wrong ) is on the way out, the poly bushes supplied with the car were yellow ( shitpart) out done themselves , 6 months and well on the way to being replaced,,, my fault, should of checked before I fitted,, will replace with originals and get a good few years

So your clunk is fixed :) Did you have a vibration aswell before doing it, or was it just the clunk?

I'm waiting on my CV joint arriving and then will get the LH side done, though I am temped to do the RH side aswell at some point in the near future...

No vibrations, just an annoying clunk when turning the steering, check your front props uj's, I had a vibration and noise when I first got this one, everyone was saying it's coming from the wheels, wasn't till my prop sheared the UJ that I found it, lol, if you only get clicking turning one way, sure sign of UJ

mm, i've done the UJ's twice since I've had it, and in a final bid to see if that was the problem, I bought a whole brand new front prop - and nothing changed...

I'll crawl under later and check the UJ's again, but pretty sure it's something on the axle itself which is causing it - either wheel/tyre, CV, bearing etc..

It had a replacement diff a few years ago, new UJ's, new ball joints, whole new prop shaft, new track rod, new drag link, new steering damper, new steering box (as you know!) ... so really only bearings and CV's on the axle which haven't been changed!

I want to do radius arm bushes as I've heard they can have an effect, but starting to run out of ideas now!

I'm still thinking tyres Marty. Pop a spare set on from one of the project cars and take yours in to be balanced (costs less than if they have to take wheels off). While you've got each wheel jacked up, check tyres for out-of-round by spinning them with a jury rigged pointer (screwdriver clamped to an axle stand or something)
