What a straight-through mid pipe sounds like

This was just a cheapy off eBay, 30 quid. It weighs about the same as the Br*tp*rt middle silencer I took out :-D

I bought and fitted one of them to my 2001 a couple of months ago now.

Definitely has more of a burble to it, and sounds a lot nicer when the loud pedal is utilised.

Mine is maybe a little bit droney at speed on the motorway, but it's not overbearing, and it might just be a case of me not being used to it yet! I did a couple of hundred mile round trip just before New Year and didn't get any comments from passengers of the exhaust being loud or "what's that noise" etc, so might just be me noticing it!!

i bought that pipe, and had fitted it along with my small rear box. Sounded lovely, but it really was too much. The engine seems to produce a drone around 2300rpm which bursts my head. If it wasnt for the drone i'd probably have left it like that!

I ended up getting a local shop to install a box into that pipe, which helped a bit, but it still drones :(

Its fine if your doing 70mph, and isnt a problem accellerating thru the gears, But if your towing or stuck in traffic doing 60ish the drone is really bad. Infact i found myself knocking it down into third at some points just to give my ears a rest.

I was originally a bit disappointed by the OEM exhaust noise but now I really like how quiet it is, and outside the car there's a really deep sub-woofer feel to it :)

I had the same concept - but it was a bit of polylock flexible pipe replacing my rusty centre silencer. Sounded exactly the same as Marty's does now, and I loved it.

Currently I have half of the crap £249 stainless exhaust on ebay (with one part of the T piece welded up because there was no way the rest would fit), and its tiny centre silencer, and empty cats. It is very nice sounding, but very loud. And there is some rasp under load from the empty cats. If this P38 lives on, at some point I'll go back to cats, no middle silencer, and standard rear silencers. Loved that sound.

Our red one is standard - so very quiet. I do appreciate it feels a bit more luxurious... but at the same time, a V8 needs to make the sound of its people :)

I'm a little disappointed in the sound from inside the cabin. I agree it sounds nice from the outside - but I'm not out there!

I'm paying the fuel bills for a V8 - it's not for the aural benefit of pedestrians, I want to hear it myself :P

I had a look underneath to see if there's anywhere to fit one of the electronic cut out switches. Wondered if there was a way to wire it in to the TPS to have it open at a certain throttle position so it wasn't noisy all the time but I couldn't see a suitable place underneath :(

My old set of cats had the guts removed and the side welded up. They had a weird "zingy" resonance to them that I didn't like and the welds were pretty shitty, so I cut them open again, welded a baffle in so that the empty box was blocked off, stuffed the bit behind it with rockwool, and welded a cover over them.

Instantly the car felt a hell of a lot quicker, it was a lot quieter and I started getting 240 miles to a tank of gas instead of 200. I can only conclude that having them there as a kind of "resonance box" really, really screwed up the gas flow down the exhaust.

My journeys are either around town or long distances towing a variety of trailers so I didn't really notice at first, but mine seems to be using less LPG now I have a complete new system with cats (admittedly much smaller than the originals) that with the gutted ones that were on it before. I also had the odd zingy noise but as it was only noticeable from outside (and I'm not usually outside), I ignored it. Now I just have a very pleasant hum.....

Rutland - with the centre box removed, you will certainly hear it inside the cabin. But it isn't overpowering by any stretch. And with the windows down, through a little village with buildings either side, how does James May put it... something about the fizz?

Interested to read the effects people have noted regards decats. Lots of owners of the many Nissans I've been converting have decatted, I've done the decat for many of them and will be decatting my own Nissan's exhaust (ref my 'dead engine on holiday in Cornwall' thread). Got to wonder what dynamics are at play that causes worse performance/mpg after decat, I don't think anyone on the Nissan forum has noticed the same. Widening and narrowing of the exhaust section close to the manifold / heat loss / loss of exhaust pulse scavenging, probably never know but surprised to read of performance/mpg increases when cats have been put back in. Maybe when I decat my own Nissan I'll weld a pipe inside having read this, there are 4 cats on it though.
