Hello folks,

Having spent the last few months ferrying around bits of Scimitar, sitting watching me work on the Scimitar and even not getting much mention in the magazine (because the focus is on the Scimitar), my long suffering and neglected P38 is making its feelings felt.

I knew I was carrying a few snags on her and she was due a service but two recent new issues have made me stop and take stock of the old girl. Particularly as I'm taking her to a small local car show in a few weeks.

So the current list is:

Engine
Oil & Filters
Crankcase breather loose and leaking oil
Turbo heat shield shot
Aux drive belt

Mechanical
EAS Valve block and pump seals
Steering backlash (suspect box adjustment)
Drivers window regulator - recent failure, worn (started making machine gun noises at top of travel)
Air-con hasn't worked since purchase

Electrical
Very reluctant to lock from key-fob, but unlocks instantly - recent failure (brand new key one year ago)
Heated seats haven't worked since purchase
Instrument cluster info display screen dull on left end (back light bulb?)
HEVAC does not regulate temperature
Transmission temp sensor (new fitted, just not yet attached to transmission cooler as can't get front bumper off).

Body & Fittings
Needs a blumin good clean and polish!
Pollen filters and foam scuttle panel insert.
Nearside front indicator housing loose due to broken clip.
Dashboard warped around outer end of passenger side windscreen demisting vent.
Air ducting joints need sealing as poor air flow.
Rear bumper not fitted correctly at center, sitting high as it has worn paint from lower tailgate.
Tailgate release button weather seal perished

Upgrades
Fit reversing camera to go with new touch screen android head unit.
Read instruction manual for new touch screen android head unit.

That's quite a list, and I suspect that there may be one or two more that I have either missed or are unaware of yet. I feel quite ashamed.

How does it compare to other peoples 'snag lists'?

Yikes, that's some list.
Makes mine sound almost new lol.

Ahem, it's far from it lol.

A lot of those are quick and simple, others not so. My list is quite a bit shorter:
Rear washer nozzle clogged
Drivers side blower bearings intermittently noisy
Slight oil leak from somewhere above the oil filter (either pressure switch or pressure relief valve O ring)

but then the big one. If I really boot it, I can get the chain in the transfer case to skip a tooth. Now considering it's the original transfer case so has done 377k miles, it hasn't done bad but needs to be done. Can't decide whether to buy the chain and bearing and seal kit from Ashcrofts, pull it off and do it myself (not a fun job) or simply get a recon (also from Ashcrofts) and get it fitted by someone with a lift and transmission jack.

Recently fitted a reversing camera (a wireless option with my Garmin sat nav) and fitted it in the bottom part of the bumper above the tow hitch. Mainly to make hitching up a trailer on my own a lot simpler but it also gives a good view so I don't put the towball through someone else's number plate when reversing into a parking space.

It's longer than mine but there's honestly a lot of stuff there that you could knock off in pretty short order.

If you want to compare....

1. Viscous Coupling (arrived yesterday)
2. Nasty scratch/dent above rear left wheel arch. This needs proper surgery and probably a replacement door. Super annoying as she had great bodywork when I bought her.
3. CD player just shows "Error"
4. Sat Nav doesn't get a signal
5. I think the mid speaker in the driver's door card is dead

She's drivable but I don't want to put any more miles on her until the viscous is replaced or it'll just wear out the front tyres even more and damage the UJs and diff at the front. I'm tempted to DIY but not that tempted. I'll need a prop tool and probably a gear puller.

3/4 probably mean "Android head unit" but that'll have to wait.
5 Yeah I should do that. One day.

They always say if you leave something it will bite you in the bum when it can. One of my minor things became major yesterday. Outside temperature 31 degrees and blower decided to stop working completely. HEVAC detected the problem so cut the power to the other one too. Not that much fun in what is effectively a mobile greenhouse in the sun......

Drivers side blower swap now done. Problem with the old one appears to be a dodgy commutator as it didn't move when initially powered up but as soon as it was spun, started to move, albeit slowly and with a lot of vibration.

Toasty! I remember driving a black Fiat Coupe through France in summer when the aircon quit. Luckily GF of the time was a heat-o-phile but I was a mess!

Thanks Dave but if I'm going to take it off and pull it to bits, I'd rather rebuild it with new bits rather than secondhand ones no matter how good they look. You'd still need to add a set of seals to it (and preferably bearings) as even if they didn't leak before you can bet anything you like they will after being taken apart and put back together. Having pulled one off before and knowing what a really fun job it is, I'd rather only take it off once.....

Actually, I have got a brand new unused p38 transfer box under my workbench in the garage (and no you can't have it).

I bought it on Ebay a couple of years ago and it is one of those jobs I have been meaning to get round to.
I have already fitted a new HP24 box so this will compliment it.

The only problem is the transfer box is for a manual gearbox. However, I have an auto epicyclic gear set to change it over. I also need to get a spare handbrake drum assembly so I can build it up completely before finding a garage to fit it.

Just sprayed my door mirrors and need to fix my sub woofer next. Then maybe tackle the transfer box.

I'd probably get a few more propshaft nuts... at least a couple of the new ones i put on at the back were already starting to round... even with the propshaft nut tool! The access to the nuts at the back is a PITA because of the angle it comes off at. You'll probably get another use out of them anyway, and they aren't done up stupid tight - but up to you... They're 3/8 UNF and an be had on the likes of eBay in packs of 10, probably cheaper than what a LR place would sell them to you!

Well I have had a parcel delivered containing a colection of filters, a window regulator mechanism and an indicator lense so that will get me started this weekend. Though I do now need to add a replacement drivers door mid-range speaker to the list after inadvertently pulling the wires out of the old one (don't ask).

I do however need to find the part number of the window regulator plastic sliders as mine are worn and are allowing the window to rock slightly as it goes up and down.

She's attending a local car show weekend after next so need to get her presentable to wave the flag for the P38.

Thanks for the offer, if that part number is for the speaker mine is a PRC 8045 or an E26640 depending on which number is the part number.

As for the sliders, I have a brand new pair that I have now fitted along with the Britpart regulator. The window now works nice and smoothly.

Ta, and there are a number of them on eBay for around £10 delivered.
