The garage has fiddled with the acutator and decided it is faulty. Is it something the fiddled about with when they fixed the leak in the FIP. No. So not, they say , covered by the warranty. Next issue. The part is no longer on production!! Bosch 2467135197. Any ideas guys????

The part number quoted is the complete top half of the pump. They will have had this off to repair the seals. It is the part that you slide backwards and forwards to alter the pump settings. I did a search online and I only found this French one:
http://www.reparationinjecteur.co.uk/actuateur-vp36-bosch-2467135197-c2x16434768 It works out at £500!
It is quite a tricky procedure changing the seals and it is easy to do it wrong and mess things up.
Was the car running ok before, except for the leaks?

Hi Dave. Yes it was running fine. There were no issues with starting, (that was it's one good feature!!!!) running or anything else at that moment in time. So. Are you saying that the repair that was done to cure the leak, would have necessatated removal of this part? Since the repair was done the starting was not as sharp as it had been and the fuel consumption was not as good by a few miles. Would this actuator have had any effect on this? I hope they have not mucked it up completely. They are saying they did not touch that part.

They could have possibly played with it .............. they claim on their website to be 'diesel fuel injection specialists'.

OldShep. Exactly. Diesel fuel injection specialists. They are the only people around this area that are supposed to be " experts " When the leak developed it was the only place the garage could recommend. Whatever happens I am stuck between the rock and a hard place. They say they did not touch it when they fixed the leak. How do I know if that is true? They are going to charge me for replacing the part . If they cannot get one they are rattling on about a new pump. This is beginning to spiral out of my control.

Tell them to leave it alone for the moment and let you consider your options, would be my recommendation.

I haven't looked at the part number as I've just got home, but if Dave says it's the part that needs to be removed to swap the seals and fix the leak... And that adjusting that will adjust the pump, which needs to be done after doing the seals (I think from the bits I have read, people normally scratch a line across the parts, so they line them up again properly)... But yet they are saying they haven't touched the part... But the leak is fixed... Something isn't ringing true about any of this.

Telling them to hold off ordering expensive parts that may not (and probably won't) fox the problem is within your rights to, especially if you haven't given them carter blanche to fix the problem "whatever the cost"

It sounds more and more like someone who knows P38s has to go and have a look at it, rather than letting these idiots waste any more of your time and money.

Sorry if that's a bit blunter than I usually am, but I've had a shit day and been kicked around by people myself this afternoon, which has meant I've got home about 4 hours later than I should have!

To be perfectly honest, I'd be inclined to turn up with a trailer and take it away. At least then anyone that does go to sort it out isn't going to be doing it on their premises (and showing up how little they know).

Hi Marty. Yes. Dave has found a part on a French site £500. I think your advice is sound. I will call the garage today and say I need thinking time.
I am happy to take advice from you and the other guys.
Now. If I decide to take it away from the garage, is there anyone local to me that could do that?. (The local breakdown place is not cheap!!)
Where would I take it.?
Is it worth getting someone with a nanocon to take a look?
Clive603 said there might be the possibility of him coming here with his. I would be quite happy to be mechanics mate!

Have to do these replies in short messages as it times out!!!
It looks, at the moment, like I am going to have to purchase some new wheels. Not looking forward to that!!!! Probably, knowing my luck, I will get something that will have problems and the hiccups will start all over again!!! Not being able to get about and my own thing is doing my head in. I am probably too independent but that is me. Hiring something which does not give me pain to drive would mean spending a lot more money. If I did not have the issue with my leg the cost would not be quite so bad but cost it would. Don't get me wrong. I could so easily, according to the consultant, have lost my leg from the knee down. I didn't, thanks to him, but it has left me with the problem when driving. Small cars have the pedals too close together and twisting my foot to get from one pedal to the other really is uncomfortable and I end up with my size 9s on both, if I am not careful.
So. Now to think what to do. To be honest. I haven't a clue.

Mazz, hold on!!! Typical woman, so impatient lol . Remember all the guys on here have jobs, I'm the only retired old goat on here. The weekend approaches. Once one of the blokes get hold off of your beastie, it will fixed in no time but they can't just drop everything and run down to Portsmouth. You will have seen Marty has got problems with his at the moment and I'm too far away now. Mind you, my toy doesn't have a tow hook anymore.

I'm retired too and so would have no problem in coming down to Portsmouth to help out if I knew anything about diesels. Unfortunately I've never owned, driven or worked on a diesel car of any description so I really don't have the experience to help you beyond doing the mechanics mate bit for someone else.

Sorry

I agree with the other guys that if the seals have been replaced its likely that the pump wasn't put back together just so. Seal kits are very inexpensive but re-built and tested units from proper specialists are very expensive. There has to be a reason for the difference.

Maybe you've tried this, but how do you get on with left foot braking in an automatic?

Mazz,

I agree with the guys about not authorising any further work with the garage until we take stock of the situation. A new fuel injection pump is mega bucks. You are talking about £1450 or more. The electronics in the top bit are also unique to the p38 so it can talk to the BECM. The same pump off a BMW or Opel or Vauxhall wont work unless the head of the pump is changed to the p38 version.

My problem is, although I have had my diesel for 17 years, I have never had my FIP off or even replaced the seals. There has been no need as I have never had a leak. I am fairly familiar with how the FIP works, in fact I have two old ones in my garage but only suitable for rebuilding.

Lets just back off a bit. Before we start accusing the garage of incompetance and/or lying. They probably are, but first we need to confirm that the top of the FIP needs to come off to replace the seals. I am 99% certain it does and I also know that the FIP needs to be "on the cam" before removing the top. If it is not done right, I believe the FIP has to come off and then needs setting up on the bench if that is not done.
We need to find someone who has actually done it before but there are only a couple of diesel owners on here.

I know that Hoppy on here has replaced his seals. He is away from home at the moment working. I will contact him and get back to you.

Hi Dave.
I have told the garage to hold off for the moment. They have said they have sourced a refurbished unit. At least I think that is what he said. I was at work trying to do the call and it is sometimes a bit noisy. He then said the fitting is tricky. I asked if the top was taken off to repair the leak and he said yes but they did not fiddle with it. I also asked, if I should decide not to proceed any further, what would be the space of time it could be left there. He said there are a lot of bits and pieces not on the car at the moment. Might be a couple of days.

Mazz,

A refurbished unit is going to be at least £1450 + labour.

I talked it through with Hoppy. So we can eliminate things, can you ask the garage to put it back as it was and first try running it with the MAF unplugged.
