Don't know how you'd save all the repair and maintenance info without the ball ache of saving each page? Don't think that would work as the links would then be broken. How utterly F***ing stupid to lose all of that info!

I think it stays there as long as civilisation has enough electricity to power their servers. I heard about this group, but never checked their program out.
I mean, why copy the entire www and save it for posterity? what's the point? who would look?...... Just goes to prove how wrong I was!
It all seems to be there as images, so possibly all is not lost!
I may have to donate to their cause if true!

Obviously the material on rr.net is subject to copyright even if they have removed it, and simply copying it off archive.org and onto another site would Not Be Cricket.

There's a wealth of information if someone wanted to do a proper writeup though.

But surely, as it is no longer on RR.net, they can't claim it's copyright as they've binned it. It's much the same as digging through someones dustbin (although I'm pretty sure that's illegal too).....

I can't see them doing a great deal about it at the moment.

There only seems to be a few people complaining and even then only seemingly from the P38 crowd.

I had a look in the other vehicle specific sections and didn't see people complaining.

There's a couple of people that have responded to the admins own upgrades thread and Richard's threads about missing stuff. Not much beyond that though.

RR.net might now be dead - or waiting to be re-populated from fresh by owners of newer models that perhaps care about different things than repairing their cars?

That is something I can't work out. To me the idea of a forum is where you ask questions about things you don't understand, whether it is how to operate something or how to repair something. So why would the owner of a brand new L405, Velar, etc need to use a forum, he's got an owners handbook to find out how to operate it and the supplying dealer to fix it if anything needs fixing?

Some generalisations ahead :P

Possibly mostly driven by people that aren't actually repairing their own cars but taking them elsewhere to be fixed so maybe only want/need a more basic level of information? If they want information, they're more likely to simply post their own question than look for an old thread?

The newer ones are generally quite a bit less DIY friendly and owners might be a bit less concerned about the intricacies of how to disassemble the suspension valve blocks etc.

There's more newer ones than older ones now, I'd bet. It kinda makes sense for the forums owners to cater to their larger audience and losing the lesser needed data could be quite a cost saving for them. It does sick for the people that do want that info though.

Had a quick look, it's a nice clean modern responsive Web UI rather like the one that FlaskBB comes with I guess. Shame they weren't able to keep the rest of the stuff going.

In an unguarded moment you might catch me wondering aloud about how to scale FlaskBB out.

Whereas it may indeed be "a nice clean modern responsive Web UI" this does not change the fact that it is a whole new forum...Sorry..."Community" and they did not notice that they tossed the baby out with the bath water, nor does it seem they give a damn that they have done so.
Interesting point about the thundering silence from the other forums.
I suppose on the face of it, any Classic people either do not need the tech info, or get it elsewhere. Not many of them anyway.....

As they age and get flogged off, someone will need to repair them, and the loss of all of the data base for that from rr.net is really sad.

Just out of interest, why can't we click on an icon to agree with a post either here or on the RR.net forum. On the MB owners forum when you read a post you can click on an icon, at the bottom of the post, to agree with the comments of the writer, without having to write a new post yourself.

It is just a small but useful icon as you can agree with someone without having to post a new comment. Just a thought.

Also, am I being childish in suggesting that there is no icon for posting a "smiley" ?

Probably because it's using forum software rather than social media software. It might be possible but only Gordon would know that as he built it. As for smileys, presumably you can if you know the code for them but I found it bloody annoying on RR.net if you put P38 in brackets so it turned the 8) into a smiley whether you wanted it to or not

Yes, maybe there are no 'thumbs up' and 'smiley' etc emoticons in use as it is mainly adults using these sites Pierre3 ?

Seriously the general concept on here is akin to chatting to friends in a pub of course... Not sure how well that would work if folks just gave a 'thumbs up/down' or grinned/frowned !!

RR.net once had a much friendlier atmosphere too of course..... although their latest layout just makes me laugh... !

It is really quite simple to let someone know you agree......
just hit a couple of keys (I know, very tedious to have to hit more than one, and so time consuming too!) and just agree.....
Even a +1 will suffice, and that is only 2 keys (OK, 3 as you have to enter a Carriage return as well)
If however, you think the post is a load of codswallop, then let us all know and possibly toss your 2 cents into the hat as well.

Sighhhhhhh..... It is a bit like worrying a loose tooth....I keep looking back in on the death throes of rr.net.
Richard is doing his best to help save the small shred of dignity it has left by helping to write a new intro to the site that actually makes sense.
He came up with a very nice one and got this response from Admin:

"Asking mod team for input and need to slim this down to 150 characters".

Give me a break! It is the sites Introduction! Break out a few extra letters and make it clear what the site is about.
How long will it be before ALL posts will need to be 150 characters or less???

Same as if you try to amend a signature it now comes up and says you can only have a maximum of 2 lines. Wassup? They worried we'll use up all the bandwidth on their super new platform?

I'm just waiting for them to adopt the new introduction that I've edited the hell out of to get it down to less than 150 characters. Then point out that it was written by someone they banned for life.......

They want it under 150 characters so it displays on the Google search results without cutting text off. IIRC the character is actually 160 for the search result text.

The "intro" is nothing at all to do with making the site better for people using it - it's to maximise their SEO (search engine optimisation) performance I'd bet.

It also explains why they ended up with such a silly assortment of vehicles and trim levels in their own intro. They just picked keywords with the highest number of searches without stopping to make sure they were actually relevent or even made sense.
