Consensus seems to be that Beru are the only ones to use. Mine had cheaper ones I put in before going to Beru. World of difference.

It certainly sounds like a glow plug problem. Clouds of black smoke means unburnt fuel.
There is a relay for the glow plugs (and an 80 amp fuse built into the relay), located in the ECU box at the back of the battery.
You can test the glow plugs in situ with a multimeter to see if power is switched on to them when the bulb is lit.
Check the tracks on the relay to see if there is any corrosion or burning.

One other thing to check is the leak off pipes and clear fuel lines.
You should not have any air bubbles in the clear line.
Leak off pipes start to allow in air causing starting problems. Mostly cheap pipe that is too large diameter

How much fuel in tank?
I ask, because the pump in the tank starts leaking at an oring letting in air.
You can also test the pump by bridging the relay pins with relay removed.

They can be a pig if both, glow plugs not working, and air in the lines.

Btw, faults are not logged for glow plug problems.
You may find some for the fuel injection pump, but I'm betting it's air in the system and glow plugs not working.
How's battery charge?
