I'm at Crowborough in Sussex. Not too far for a quick test to be arranged. Was supposed to be meeting a 7 pm flight at Luton airport this coming Sunday which would have been ideal with an early start for a quick afternoon deviation to Dorking.

I have a Nanocom and a set of suspension setting blocks too. (Memo to me must re-set the standard height as its riding a little high.)

Just to put this one to bed.

Yesterday I fitted a set of Billies supplied by Paddock spares at a very sensible price!

Easy to fit. Quality looked good and when I compared the amount of damping on the bench side-by-side, the originals were definitely less and therefore did give a bit of a roly-poly ride.

Testing these on the road, my wife instantly gave the thumbs up for a less sickening ride! It really did feel that much better on the road.
While we were out today, I drove a couple of well-known byways in the Surrey Hills. The suspension was just super compliant even on the higher off road setting. It was that much smoother than my old Discos which had springs on the front and air on the rear.

A definite improvement over the original but of course the original dampers were 19 years old!

And finally!

Now that I've driven a few hundred miles with the Bilsteins fitted, I agree with I believe Richard who said that the original Boge dampers give a better ride. The ride is better regarding rolling, pitching and general togetherness with the Billy's but for actual comfort and compliance, the Boge dampers are superior.

In a world where we want everything, sadly one product does not do everything. Fit the Billys for a better ride as far as handling is concerned but if that doesn't float your boat and you just want superior comfort then stick with the original Boge dampers.

Problem is that the original Boge quality units don't seem to exist any more. I fitted a set of OEM Boge units with the correct Range Rover part numbers and got maybe 15,000 miles out of them before they clapped out. Rough pull'n push comparisons with the orginal 80,000 odd miles ones off the car, which I'd not got round to binning, revealed a similar lack of damping. In both cases the front end was rolling and pitching around in a scary manner. Bad enough to affect the steering!

I agree that the Bilsteins are a bit on the sporty side and would rather have the originals.

I'd agree, mine handled like a boat on the original shocks so I replaced them with some Terrafirma units, and while they're stiffer the ride is still twice as good as my Disco 2 and it handles really well, how long they last is another story, I like a moron fitted the +2 shocks instead of the stock length ones, that'll be a lesson of not to order on your phone!!

They'll be swapped out in new year to some better suited ones, maybe a set of Koni's

Did you swap the steering damper at the same time? I didn't and it was still weaving like Friday night drunk. Changed the steering damper and it felt much better immediately. I think it was the same make as my shocks - although it was 2 years ago and I can't remember the make now.
