Yep!

This time it is the front corner of the headliner under the sun visor is getting wet, and only on the captains side, the drinkers side is fine..

At the moment..

I've had this before and seemed to fix it, the sunroof frame had rotted and the glass was pulling away from the frame near the rear of the frame, I sealed it however what was happening was water was wicking under the seal and along the inside of the glass, which subsequently soaked the headliner..

I'm thinking of pulling the seal off the sunroof completely and sealing around under the glass, do you have to pull the cassette to remove the seal?

The water isn't running down the screen.

The sunroof drains are clear and all attached, I've poured water down them with no ill effect

Anyone had this?

Under the top screen trim, at the end of the roof rail there is a hole, it was sealed with sealant 20 yrs ago when it left the factory, it needs redoing by the sounds of it

It normally soaks the roof lining around the visors,, I think it pulls off from memory,, was 10 plus years ago I had screen done

Top trim is a little bit of a process to remove.

Remove the side trims (against the doors).
DO NOT pull the top trim off!
If you pry gently yo will see it is held on with sliding clips which you need to slide about 1/2" to the left.
The book says to use a credit card, but no way will that work with a truck that has been in the wild for a number of years.
I used a small steel paint scraper directly onto the clip, and even then some heeded a gentle tap with a very small hammer.

All came undone with no issues. Once apart it is obvious how it works, and quite ingenious. The bottom trim would have been much better made this way.

Hi Chris, you mention a hole that was sealed at the factory - are there two holes i.e the one that's sealed and the one that takes the drain tube ?
I've just noticed the trim below the visor is getting "wet"

I have a picture of what I think Chris is talking about - but unfortunately because I'm on an older iPad just now, I can't put it onto imgur to upload here. Maybe later on the desktop.

Basically though, the longitudinal (front to rear) trims on both sides of the roof conceal a body weld. Where the welded panels fold down to the windscreen aperture, a hole can appear. I guess it could be the famour LR build tolerances. This hole is on the outside of the car.

I think you'd need the roofrail trims and windscreen top trim off to see it properly?

You might, or might not have this hole. I went looking for this precise thing on the passenger side yesterday as I thought it would be an easy fix. What I found was that my windscreen is no longer sealed to the car.

I'll be out soon excavating the driver's side and the scuttle panel....

The frame and inside of my sunroof is getting what looks like a lot of condensation on it/

I dunno.

No water is dripping down the screen, the carpet is dry too

Inside of the sunroof will get a lot of condensation on it if there is moisture in the car. So if you have a leak somewhere, the moisture that gets in will stay there until the car sits in the sun or gets warm inside when you use it and it will then condense on any cold surface, like the inside of the sunroof or windscreen.

There are drips forming off the bottom of the sunroof frame on the inside..

This is the picture I mentioned above. It's just something I lifted off the web somewhere because it was supposed to be a 'common P38 issue'. I don't actually think it will be that common because otherwise there would be loads of pics of this - and I could only find this one.

But anyway - just in case it helps.

However I don't get water dripping, it doesn't go down the windscreen or drip onto the carpet. it is just dampness on the top corner of the headliner.

Now I'm pondering how the sunroof seal comes off...............

You'll need to take the glass out. Slide the plastic covers on each side (forward if I remember right) so they come off and undo the two Torx screws on each side that hold the glass to the mechanism and lift it out. The seal is there to keep wind noise down, not to stop water getting in, the drains are there to get rid of it once it is there. You'll need to drop the headlining out to get to where they are attached to the sunroof cassette (so you may as well retrim it while it is out.....).

It was something we wasn’t aware of till our departed friend OB found it, can’t remember wether or not he had that issue, but since then I’ve seen plenty of posts about the sealant failing there,, would hurt to stick a bit of sealant there for piece of mind.

Is it better to lift it out with the sunroof on the tilt or when it is shut?

I'm stumped.

Pulled the trim off the top of the windscreen, and fucked every clip as it happens.. ARGH!!!

Anyway...

The windscreen is still very much bonded to the car no air gaps, I ran a bead of arbomast around the seal anyway just in case there were any cracks I couldn't see.

There were no holes in my roof, or any missing seam sealer, however the seam sealant looked to be heat/weather cracked. so i gave that a going over too..

I do wonder about this car sometimes.

time will tell!

After a week with the car cover on the roof is bone dry don't feel happy putting a cover on it every time I park it!

Would this happen if the sunroof drains were blocked?

I can get water down them, but the rail has to fill with water before it starts to glug away.

Anyone cleaned them out with compressed air?

I would answer a definite 'yes' to that question. I have my roof lining out at the moment, and therefore all the side trims. I haven't yet run anything down the front drain tubes, but I have removed the grommets from the rear tubes/wheel arches.

They both had plenty of 'grot' in them. Probably not enough to stop them draining, but certainly enough to slow down the flow.

So I can see a situation where the grommets are a bit gunged up, and needing a weight of water in the drain tube to open them up - definitely.
