Yes, they never fitted one on the drivers side, just a couple of plastic blanks over the holes. Nothing to stop you getting a spare passenger side one and fitting it to the drivers side though. https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/125985/5497/grab_handle___mist_grey___headlining___p38_range_rover_
Or the sunglasses' case which was an accessory for Freelanders and Disco 2 and is now impossible to find ,,,
I did exactly that to mine, fitted a grab handle from a parts P38 that I had for a while. I like it, I sometimes grab it to enter or exit the vehicle.
IIRC, mine had a garage door opener mounted in that location (maybe an NAS thing?). I couldn't make it sync to my garage door, so I put something useful in its place.
Garage door opener was an option in the US. It may well have been here too but a standard UK size garage is too small for a P38. Standard width for a single garage is only 7 feet wide, so unlikely that many owners would have ordered one.
I have a decent single car garage, 7' tall door. The LR's fit inside well enough to work on them. Where I live, a lot of the year is too cold to be working on your cars outside.
While the door is 7 feet wide (and either 6' 6" or 7' high) a standard single garage in the UK is only 8' 6" wide. So once you managed to get in (after folding the door mirrors), there's not enough room to open the doors and get out! As for working on it, you've no chance, there's barely enough room to squeeze down the side of it let alone get around it to work.
Agree with the above, here in the old continent either you have a side-by-side double garage with single door, of you have a house with a larger area/shed/barn to play around. Space became more than just a luxury ...
Back on the topic, as you guys mention a grab handle to get in, under the two A-pillar plastic trims there are bosses/threaded holes for screwing something, probably a grab handle like the ones jap 4x4s have (extremely useful), on both sides (driver and passenger, or passenger and driver for the UK chaps who still not have updated to the world standard LOL). The holes are 175mm apart and I am (not actively, though) looking for any car "oh jesus" handle that fit that dimension, to drill through the plastic trims - elegantly - and have a functional grab handle in a proper position.
Never seen a P38 with anything there ...
Don't you have one on the passenger side already, or is that something they missed off on EU spec? The actual handles have a hook to take the force of someone hanging on them, the screws just stop them from falling out.

Don't have any A-pillar grabs on my Euro spec.
Interesting, a UK spec car has a grab handle above the passenger door, not on the A pillar like the Discovery, and one each side that also have coat hooks above each rear door.. They are spring loaded so they sit flush with the headlining until you hang on them. They didn't fit one above the door on the drivers side, probably assuming the driver can haul himself into the car on the steering wheel, just a pair of plastic blanks to cover the holes in the headlining.
It's funny - I noticed those A pillar threaded bosses just the other day, when taking the headlining down. It seems obvious that they would be for grab handles, and I also wondered if they could be repurposed for anything useful. No ideas have come to mind yet.
I would like to find a decent sunglasses holder that I could fit where the drivers/RH handle blanks are.
Don, your best-of-class choice would be STC50086, the original accessory for Free/D2/P38.

If you could only find it ....
Richard, I agree with the concept of grabbing the wheel to climb on, but my past 4x4s that had the handle in the proper place - the a-pillar - grant the easiest access ever! Grabbing the oh jesus handle from outside is an awkward movement ... I do not know what they were thinking, but is the proper thing to have in that place. If you don't fancy a handle, that would be a nice place for a flashlight holder ...
I suspect they deleted the A-pillar grab handles due to concerns of smashing your head into them in an accident.
Nah, they're very well tucked away until you pull on them and then they pivot down. They spring up flush with the headlining when not in use.
