Hi All

Slightly daft question it may sound like (and wasn't sure if this was best put in here or oily bits) but the rear bumper on my mate's p38 has fallen off today, as the bits that attach to the end of the chassis have turned to rust. I'm over 100 miles away and think from the photos that the bits he needs are the two mounts, ANR2381. I can find these, but the guy with him is saying they need to be welded to the bumper. I think they clip in place somehow but just wanted to confirm if thats the case if anyone knows?

I've got a couple of photos of the bits that have gone rusty, will try to link them now, but not the inside of the bumper.

I had to do mine when I first got the car. They definitely don't need welding. IIRC I think they are just a bolt-on job - i think the 4 horizontal bolts you see are what holds the crush can on - definite angle grinder job, that one

Cheers, going to have a look at the bumper side today, it's the caps into the bumper that I'm not sure about, looks to me that the caps somehow clip into the bumper as far as I could tell?

Other side as you say bolts in, those are so rusted they definitely won't undo, but might fall off?

This may help. A bit of an odd angle. Probably going to need to drill out the bolts too.

Mine have rotted off, the outrigger that comes off the chassis has snapped in half and the bolt on affair that holds the bumper is still attached to the bumper but not the chassis

My bumper is held up with zipties LOL

That helps somewhat, thanks, Never got down there to have a look today as was the plan, but think i can see where he means needs welding back on now.

Nice pic David - it confirms something I came across at the weekend when I removed my front bumper. Took the two bolts out; gave it a little nudge downwards, and it just slid off. I didn't have to do anything with the clips at the sides, but having read up on the job beforehand, I'd been expecting to have something rusty to contend with.

Studying the parts afterwards it seemed that someone just hadn't bothered to flip the wire clips downwards. I thought I could see by the shape of the bracket that the wire was supposed to sit in the slots, but your pic shows it nicely.

wow, the salt on the roads over there must just kill your cars. i had my rover about 4 years and do a lot of beach work and i bitch about a bit of surface rust on things . looking at the rust on these i have nothing to complain about .is this typical of all cars ?

^^ I might have mentioned this here before, or maybe it was somewhere else: I was waiting in a queue for a ferry once - in the Defender. A tourist from Oz wanders past, has a look at the rear door, and asked me: "Jeez! What do you do with that thing, wash it in salt water?!"

Before they made cars from zintec and plastic, rust and cars in the UK was just the way it was. Poor steel and an unhappy workforce in the 70s and 80s made it even worse.

The salt on the roads also depends on where you live in the country. I guess somewhere on the south coast of England sees very little, up here in the north of Scotland we see a LOT. Imagine setting off in the early morning for a 1 hour drive to a ferry; you come around a corner and you're following the gritting wagon. What do you do? Listen to your car crumble away around you, or overtake and take a chance on the icy road ahead...?

(I usually go for the icy road!)

Cheers David, odd angle but that does explain whats missing now I've had a look at it. His looks closer to StrangeRover's photos, rotten and the plastic bits have disappeared completely.

The metal bit inside the bumper on his appears to have detached itself from the rest of the bumper, this bit

How is that usually joined to ANR2381? And is the metal tray bit shown in the above stuck into the bumper normally, bolted or somehow else attached? or are we missing more bits?
