On the way back home after Easter, we noticed the Hairy Exhaust issue had returned. You probably don't remember that I had the backboxes replaced four years ago and the parts had a two year warranty. The first pair were replaced a couple of months outside warranty (Garage was shut during Covid lockdown) and the replacements have now dumper their fibreglass out of the tailpipe just like the first lot.
Is it worth a go to get the new set replaced like the last lot?

You can only ask, but generally the rule is there is no warranty on warranty. i.e. if it is 12 months and something is replaced under warranty in that 12 months, then the clock doesn't start again.

Mind you, if you are in Australia then it would definitely be worth trying as an item has to be fit for purpose and perform and last as your average person in the street would expect. Repair, Replace, Refund.

the only time warranty starts again is if it is a genuine part fitted by the actual company . if you get 2yrs warranty for a non genuine part they can replace it 3 times and still only cover for the original warranty. thats my perception of warranty unless they issue another receipt with a new warranty period stated .

If its the Klarius ones, I've not been too impressed with their bits generally. Your lucky if they even fit properly half the time without major messing around.

I bought a Klarius (Eurocarparts own brand) middle silencer box and it was way better quality than the Britpart it replaced. The Britpart lasted under a year and a half before the pipework looked like Swiss cheese and came away from the box.

They are Klarius - maybe it was a bad batch. The pipes look fine, it's the wadding that's the issue. It might be interesting to find out how loud the pipes are without anything in the backboxes!
Sad news about the warranty but it makes sense. Thanks!

OK, so I'm getting sick of people laughing at my hairy exhaust! I've tried pulling the fibreglass out but it's like a magician's handkerchief. I think I need to plan for a replacement. Given that I'm unlikely to go for a third set of Klarius backboxes. Does anyone have experience of these from Island?

That price does look a bit too good to be true, but I'm not in the market for the £600 Stainless ones from .. ulp.. Britpart either!
Cheers :)

I bought a complete system from Maltings Off Road which was Allmakes branded. That's lasting pretty well.

Stainless exhausts do occasionally come up on Ebay. Just leave a search running.
That is how I got a replacement exhaust for my diesel. I managed to get a "Double SS" exhaust which is a decent make. It has been on for years now. I got the back boxes first then later found a centre box. The only non stainless bit is the downpipe with the particulate filter.

Oh, that's interesting. The britpart one is labelled SS. Maybe it's worth the money?

can you get a quote from a local exhaust fabricator?

On mine, it came with typical rotted out aftermarket boxes. First thing to go was the rear box. I happened to find a stainless rear pipe on ebay, but it didnt have a silencer, was just pipe. I sectioned the end of it and let in an OEM (stainless) box which came from my brothers E90 BMW he'd broken for spares. Luckily mine is the single pipe system, so half the effort to replace!

Some months later the middle box disintegrated. I took it to a local exhaust fabricator, who cut back and replaced the end of the Y pipe (it had rotted thru at the flange), added a V band, and then a big stainless silencer, and mated it all up to my existing rear pipe and i think it cost around £300.

This is the company I meant SS Exhausts They make good stuff but too expensive to buy new.

A stainless exhaust is something I would buy secondhand.

Got to be careful with stainless fabrications. Often parts are made thinner because they don't corrode. Some I have seen are are flimsy.
Also my boxes are 304 but the pipes are 409, which has surface rusting. Welding is first class however; done on a machine I think.

These guys are just around the corner from me. They might be a bit bemused if I roll up in The Duchess and ask for a quiet exhaust :)

£600 plus VAT is a bit steep but it does appear to be the SS guys.

I removed the rear silencer and replaced with only a pipe on the Disco. It’s not at all loud, you just barely hear it while driving.

A few years ago my exhaust fractured and completely separated at the joint between the centre box and the back boxes. It was only picked up on the next MoT as the emissions did not make sense to the tester! In other words it did not sound like a fractured exhaust! It is an aftermarket stainless steel exhaust so not an OEM centre box. However, how about removing the back boxes and pipes and go for a run at all loads and speeds and you might find the back boxes are completely unnecessary unless you want a really quiet vehicle. Then just cut out the back boxes and weld in some straight pipes and refit.

on the factory P38 setup, the midbox does most of the work, so i could quite believe it will be fine with just straight piped backboxes.

On an aftermarket system, they may or may not have quite matched the complexity of the factory midbox. Mine for instance uses a "straight thru" style middle box, which certainly doesn't take as much of the noise out as the factory box did.

Well, I do want a really quiet P38 - I think it's part of the character of the vehicle. Having said that, I've pulled LOADS of fibreglass out of the back now and I can't hear any difference so if this carries on I might just leave the backboxes as they are until the outside rusts. They look fine externally right now, it's the perforated steel tube in the centre that has rusted out and released the wadding.
Hey ho, let's see how it goes. I'm not in a hurry to fork over cash to the exhaust manufacturers. They're not high on my list of favorite people right now!
