Hello folks,

I need new front brake discs and front and rear pads replacing. Before I go in blindly buying, does anyone have any recommendations or types to avoid?

I have seen Britpart grooved and drilled discs advertised, are they worth bothering with? Or do they just eat the pads quicker or even wear out as quick as the pads?

I am guessing Minetx or EBC for the pads

Regards,

Si.

I've used the Delphi ones from Island and never had a problems with them. They bite well and don't seem to overheat no matter how much I need to use the brakes.

I've had front EBC drilled and grooved disks on the front for 50k. They're on their third set of Greenstuff pads.

I've always just bought whatever was cheapest from a reasonable brand. Stick with the OEMs for best results and avoid unbranded stuff unless your just trying to fix something as cheaply as possible to get shot. Sort by price on eBay or autodoc (other vendors available!) and go from there.

I put drilled disks on the A4 (factory fit on certain models so you can get them from the normal aftermarket suppliers and they cost much the same as plain disks.) but they didn't really make any difference, and over time the drilled holes block up anyway. Grooved disks I've always avoided as they can be noisy and increase pad wear.

making sure the sliders and everything are working and the carriers are cleaned up so the pads can actually move makes a huge difference.

I have always used the main brands, like Girling or Mintex. The brakes on a p38 can overheat though. I remember driving down from the Hardnott Pass in the Lake District a few years ago, a 33% incline in places. Shall we say some "spirited driving" throwing a 2.5t vehicle around. I pulled up at a halt sign in Ambleside in a cloud of smoke. The discs were glowing red hot.
Some of the after market pads (not sure about EBC) don't "bite" at low speed I believe. Got to be up to temperature before they work. In the mean time you run into the back of a car.

Hardnott Pass is ridiculous! A good test of brakes to be sure. I once cycled up it with a group of mates.
Ok, no. What really happened was: I, along with a group of mates, pushed some bikes up Hardnott pass while dressed as cyclists 😃

EBC Green have great bite and they don't fade. Although I will admit, I haven't tried them on Hardnott :)
