I'm getting some strange volumetric flow rates on my MAF (datestamped 1996) and my backup MAF (history unknown- dunno why I keep it really). Both are cleaned, but are probably at the end of their lives so... <br>
Time to buy a replacement. The quandary is, obviously I'm not going to give LR £980 for a new genuine one (if they even have one) so the options are

  • used off of eBay (history unknown)
  • Bearmach (£90 ish)
  • Allmakes (ditto)

    I'm not even considering the "new" ones advertised on eBay <br>
    Anyone here had realtime experience of the above or any ideas for alternatives? <br>
    I'll probably post a query like this on the "other" site, then sit back and wait to be flamed <br>

I don't think the GEMS vehicles are nearly as fussy with their MAF's as the Bosch versions are - so Bearmach/Allmakes are probably going to work fine!

I have an eBay unbranded one and the Nanocom says that the readings from it are something like what they should be. Put it this way, it shows airflow at idle which increases as the revs go up, whether by the correct amount is anyone's guess. But, as I have a single point LPG system that is set to changeover to LPG when the revs drop below 1,200 rpm, all I do is start it, blip the throttle and it isn't using the MAF any more. I only replaced it because the old one had died completely and it didn't like starting. Live with it until we can sort your LPG system out at the Summer Camp......

Ahh, you have to ask and only then by PM when you will be told but sworn to secrecy. Even if you Google it you won't find the answer anywhere, just lots of other people with the same message in their signature.

Is that a GEMS one or one for your Thor?
I can imagine anything cheap chinese GEMS or Thor probably isn't great, but I would imagine that Bearmach or Allmakes are probably a bit better!

Ah, if only I could! Due to the temporary demise of my LPG system (gas leak somewhere between 1st solenoid at tanks and engine bay), I'm running full-time on petrol at the moment and the rich running is irritating. I hate the smell of that unburned cash coming out of the back end! <br>Gilbertd wrote:

Sorry it was an eBay GEMS one.

I'll bring it along to camp if its of interest, if not only to point and laugh at. The adaptive airflow reading went all over the show, and the only way you could keep the engine running was to hold the throttle, and then attempt pulling away going from neutral to drive at way too many revs.... gearbox did not like that.

OB, I'd almost go with a second hand genuine unit from breakers on eBay (or maybe Sloth has one from one of his old engines? They don't seem to go wrong too often - well, definitely not as often as the Bosch ones do!

That damned car tried to kill me this afternoon!

Well... my own fault really. It's on a slight slope... I went to jack up a front corner to set about removing the airbag as they're relatively new etc. Kinda forgot the handbrake is on the back of the transfer box, not the rear hubs... positioned my axle stand roughly where I wanted it, then lifted it a bit more, and the rear wheel on the same side must have lifted just enough for it to roll forwards on the other side. Proceeded to mangle my trolley jack in slow motion. I just leaned back and observed the carnage as it then landed on the stand.

Chocking the wheels... yeah should have done that. Completely forgot about the hand brake arrangement. Still, pumped up that airbag with a tyre stem valve, some hose and a compressor and retrieved the stand and then the airbag. Off to Machine Mart I go in the near future for a new jack...

Friend of mine's just bought the 3 ton low profile and I'm pretty impressed by the quality. If all you ever work on are RR's you won't need the low profile. The standard 3 ton looks a bargain at £58.00 delivered next day. <br>

Is there any other way of testing a MAF without a Nanocom. Im still getting a slight idle problem but dont fancy spending a packet on a replacement Bosch unless I know for sure its the MAF at fault.

Generic OBD interface will work on the later Bosch Motronic vehicles, so something like an ELM327 unit with either PC software or Torque on a mobile device - and you will be able to see airflow readings, fuel trims etc.
