Hi all.
I could really do with another key fob as I only got one with the car. I did also get a manual key as well. I spoke to my local independent LR specialist (JSF Norwich) and they quoted £210 for a new fob including programming. I don't know which key fob I have as the numbered part of the label has gone. Is there a way to find out which I have by plugging the car into test book etc.

Don't think you can tell which fob you have although if it can be done, Marty is your man. The key doesn't need programming, just syncing which you can do yourself (on a 2002 it should do it automatically when you put it in the ignition) and the last time anyone got one through a Land Rover main agent, it was something like £148. Apparently, LR can only supply key 1 these days so you may end up with 2 identical ones. OK unless you want to use them to control the memory seats for two different people.
I suppose it would be too logical to guess that the fob number corresponds to the memory setting for the seat ie fob 1 = memory 1?
I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
I only have key 1 and I have my seat settings saved to memory 1.
If someone moves the seat it automatically moves back to my settings when I put the key back in.

The last time I enquired of the stealers they wanted £170 and told us that all replacement keys are now Key1. The key I have is Key2 so that's OK by me but it seems pretty odd. I tried 2 local dealers and they both told me the same thing.

How many keys could they have in total? Three? Four? That might explain some Really Odd Shit in the BECM.
Four, but only the first two have memory ability I think. Just checked and I have a key 1 and 2 for mine :)

Have checked as OB said and I have key 1. jSF have a brand new fob which was ordered in for somebody else. I know the key part would have to be recut but could the fob be made to work with my car.

The blade cutting's the easy bit. AFAIK the fob chip is unique to the VIN/ BECM and can't be re-programmed. New for your vin from LR is the only way.
If rumours are true and LR can only supply Key 1 new these days, then you'd be better off having your current Key 1 cloned.
The new key that JSF had was a key 4. Can I ask are the fobs programmed to the car when they are made or does this happen when the key is synced with the car if you see what I mean.

Keys are programmed to the vehicle in the factory, yes. So key 4 from another vehicle won't work with your vehicle, no. It could be programmed to work, but any other key(s) already programmed would then stop working.
A BECM is programmed to a lockset... each lockset consists of up to 4 keys, each with their own ID. The fob code programmed to the BECM is the ID for Key1 of a particular lockset. The becm will then accept that ID and the following 3.
Key 1 and 2 do relate to the seat positions on a vehicle with memory seats. You can save and recall the memory with the buttons on the side of the seat. If you superlock the vehicle, then 'lazy unlocking' it (press and hold fob button) will then move the seat to the preset number of the key used (1 or 2). Key 3/4 will just unlock the vehcile and won't move the seat.
You can't program multiple lockset to a vehicle, nor can you reprogram a key to work with another vehicle.
I have a fob tester, that will capture the fob code (usually) and from that, I can work out what key you have for your vehicle, and also what fob code should be stored in the BECM.

I think I have key 1 as it works with the lazy seat and sets it to position one. I think the easiest option would be to just order another key. The lazy seat thing doesn't bother me so key key 3 or 4 would do if available. To sync the new key is it just a matter of putting the key in the ignition.

Just watch that you don't get sold another Key 1. Only a single Key 1 will sync. You can't have both synched at the same time.
Out of curiosity, is there any other way of finding out the key number? I've only ever had one key for my white one but the label fell off years ago and as it doesn't have memory seats I can't see what position it sets the seat at to see what number it is. Or would it be a case that if I ordered another key and got a number 1, I'd only know if I'd got 2 number 1's if they wouldn't both sync at the same time?

I know he has but he's two and a half hours away. I was just curious if there was any other way. I've got a blank key blade that came with a replacement case I bought once and have been meaning to get that cut. At least then I would be able to get into the car even if I would have to enter the EKA with the key or Nano to start it.
