This is the pressure sensor that's fitted:

Pressure Sensor

This is the reducer that's fitted:

Reducer

This is the injectors fitted:

Injectors

The picture of the injectors isn't brilliant but the label on the box says what the label on my injectors says.

Thanks for the help guys :) It's very much appreciated.

David.

LPG injectors wear out don't they?

With them being 12 years old and seeing as I've got no intentions of changing this car, is there any merit to just changing them and being done with it?

I don't want to throw money at it but I'd rather not have it being unreliable in the future either.

If it is worth changing them, are there any particular ones to go for?

David.

Whilst at Gordon's this evening, once we'd got his car running again we had a very quick look at the software for the LPG on my VSE.

Starting the car on Petrol and observing the Diff. Press figures we had a reading of 0.65 bar.

Starting on Petrol:
Starting on Petrol

Switching the car to LPG changed the reading, it went straight to 2.49 bar, switching back to petrol from LPG left us with a reading of 2.69 bar.

Switched to LPG:

Switched back to Petrol:
Back to Petrol

Squeezing the thin rubber tube between the reducer and the pressure switch didn't seem to make any difference to the reading regardless of how hard it was squeezed.

When we waved Testbook at it earlier on I noticed there's a fault logged with both Upstream Lambda sensors now which there wasn't last week. Testbook shows a reading for 4 lambda sensors yet there's only 2 in the exhaust. That surprised me as my old 2000 Discovery V8 definitely had 4 sensors... Has someone removed mine and blanked them off or do the P38's only have 2 sensors?

Readings from Testbook were:

O2 Sns DS - A - 0.447v
O2 Sns DS - B - 0.447v
O2 Sns US - A - 0.261v
O2 Sns US - B - 0.270v

Both of the Upstream sensors were observed switching like you'd expect, I noticed that the DS heater stayed permanently off and the US heater was switching on and off too.

I'll get a few more miles on it and if the fault codes for the lambda sensors comes back again I'll replace them both.

The fuel trims look nice and even on petrol though which is good.

That's like a different car since you did the head gasket. So much quieter and smoother :) I hope she continues to behave! At least you've got our spare P38 there incase anything goes wrong over the next few days.

Perhaps you can persuade dhallworth to drop by with his Testbook?!

That's on the cards for this evening if all goes to plan.

I hope it's nothing valve related that's causing the problems.

What happens to manifold pressure when running on petrol?

I’ll run the laptop up again tomorrow evening and have a look.

Were aircon, lights, etc on? In park or drive?

Air Con was switched off, lights off, in Park. Engine was hot, had just done circa 30 miles.

I’ll fire Testbook up as well and see if the readings on that resemble whats on the LPG software.

David.

That makes sense.

Since I cleared all the fault codes on petrol and reset the adaptive values I’ve not had any errors come back again and it’s running beautifully on petrol so I’m hoping that side of things is ok.

The new cable has arrived, has been tested and let me straight into the ECU. I've metered it out and it's exactly the same as my old cable bar the USB > Serial dongle that came with it. Strange...

Anyway, I managed to get a look at a couple of screens before the laptop battery ran out.

Revs - 760rpm
T.Gas - 5.30ms
T.Petrol - 4.31ms
Temp. Reducer - 74C
Temp. Gas - 43C
Diff. Press - 2.47bar
Man. Press - 0.50bar
Battery Volt - 13.74v
Lambda 1 - 0.5v

I didn't have time to check the lambda was switching before my battery died so I'll do that later. Do the multipoint systems have their own Lambda sensors the way single point do or do they piggy back the cars?

David.

and it seems whatever problem you had before the rebuild was the same problem you're having now?

Previously on LPG it would tug or stutter on LPG. Since I've rebuilt the reducer it seems to switch back to Petrol. Previously it just used to stutter and feel as if it was being starved but didn't actually cut back to Petrol.

What pressure would you expect to see when the cable arrives? Is there anything that's worth checking straight away when the cable arrives?

David.

Well, my cable has been dispatched, so fingers crossed!

Takes a brave man to run a Supercharged Range Rover on LPG. Those AJV8's have soft valve seats I believe. Is flashlube a total cure for that or does it just prolong the agony?

David.

What a run! The furthest I ventured in my old P38 before it caught fire was Amsterdam. We took the ferry from Newcastle so there wasn't a massive amount of miles involved.

David.

The USB > Serial adapter was definitely one of the 4 wire types. The 3 wire ones are useless for console access at work, it needs to be a 4 wire one that we use, it's the same one I'm using for this.

If this cable doesn't work, am I right in thinking you work on these for a living? Fancy doing this one!?

David.

Right, I've gotten fed up fiddling with the LPG cable. I've no idea why my cable doesn't work despite the pinouts being correct.

As a result, I've just bought the proper cable from Tinley Tech as linked to by LPGC above. Next business day delivery was £2 more then first class so hopefully it'll be here on Tuesday!

One thing no one has mentioned, what ever you do, don’t leave the key in car with door closed when connecting the battery, it WILL lock you out,

My heart sank when I was collecting a new one with one key once... I put the battery on it and heard it clunk and sh!t myself! Thankfully I checked my back pocket and found the key. Don’t think I’ve ever breathed such a sigh of relief.

David.

Well, I've tried it again and am still not having any luck. The cable is definitely correct, I've tried 2 different USB > Serial adapters, two different laptops, and still getting no joy.

I'm wondering if it's due to the version of software I've got installed being Version 6.0. I know my ECU was fitted back in 2005 so it's probably quite an old one. Would if be worth trying Version 5.0?

Does anyone have a link to Version 5.0?

David.

The rebuild kit for the vaporiser and the new filter arrived today.

I rebuilt the vaporiser and swapped out the filters and then refitted them to the car. The diaphragm in the old vaporiser didn't look that bad, nowhere near as bad as I thought it might seeing as it's been on there for 12 years. Anyway, after bleeding the cooling system through to ensure there were no air locks I tried the LPG.

The car switches to LPG and idles ok, if you rev it gently it revs fine, however if you open the throttle quickly it switches straight back to petrol and the switch beeps at you.

Here's a video of what it does:

I've got a feeling I know why my cable isn't working but haven't had time to check it. I made my new cable with Gilbert's diagram looking at the front of the plug, looking at it again and chatting with Gordon about it tonight, I think that picture is of the back of the plug so my connectors are in the wrong place.

Going by the mileage on the car and the mileage on the receipt for the LPG conversion I reckon it's done about 80k on LPG. The owner that I bought the car from reckons it's been a gradual deterioration on LPG rather then an overnight one.

David.

I've checked all that and it's assigning my adapter to COM5, I'm just wondering if the Tartarini software is expecting to see it on a specific port and that possible a reason that it can't connect to the ECU.

I'll give COM1 a try tomorrow and see how I get on with it.

David.

Right, tonight I've made a little extension lead for my LPG cable. It pins out exactly the same as the cable that Gilbert posted above yet when connected to the car still has a no communication error.

It's pitch dark up here and wet so I'm not spending any time on it tonight. I've just found out that I'm off work tomorrow so I'll have a play around tomorrow hopefully.

The Tartarini software doesn't seem to let you make many changes to the setup, has anyone else used it with a USB > Serial connector? Does it matter what port the connector is set to on the PC?

David.

Excellent, in that case, I shall go down this route as I’d imagine the cost of design would cost me more then the badge!

David.

That’s brilliant, Gilbertd, thank you!
