Thanks - reassuring - the plates - was originally owned by a Mayfair Arab who had his own number and when sold was re-registered with these plates - I suppose they are original - how that works I don't know. The reg cert says first registration in uk 01/03/1999 but the VIN is WA407496 and for parts I have to look at everything that says 'up to 99 MY'. I think it was built in '98. By the way, offering free holidays to anyone bearing a Nanocom and builders trowel - ok the builders trowel is not necessary.

I've had a scan through posts on recent pages, not sure if the following points could still be a factor or have already been ruled out:
Old TPS wasn't at the end of it's travel with closed throttle, new TPS was (at first) at the end of it's travel. Could the new TPS have been physically holding the throttle open a bit, accounting for the fast idle? Could adjusting TPS to prevent that still have made the TPS show less than typical (and prior) 0.7v in the idle position, giving unsmooth transition between idle and off idle? Or moving the TPS still a bit more cause higher than 0.7v at idle, still causing unsmooth transition but now also causing stalling on return to idle because the Ecu doesn't see the throttle as being closed?
Would've thought that if TPS was set so that with closed throttle voltage was close to 0.7, drive-ability wouldn't be too bad to start with and transition would only improve?

Having said that, one P38 conversion I did sticks in mind. The guy had received his bosses P38 instead of his annual work bonus and made much fuss about 'will the engine still idle nicely on LPG because I've heard this can be a problem'. Come the day he was dropping his P38 off for conversion he was 90 mins late, even though 85 mins before he arrived he'd told me on the phone he was only 5 mins away. On arrival he went to great lengths to point out how it was currently idling nicely at correct rpm etc... Oh and could I just re-tap the TPS securing threads, secure the TPS properly and sort out TPS wiring that been hacked about...I'm sure the bloke had had loads of prior grief with it and intended to blame me for any further idle/drive-ability problems. I had a fair bit of grief sorting it out but did manage it.

As far as TPS is concerned - the old one appeared ok - not noticeably worn to any extent and I handled everything with care and the car has always idled perfectly for 10 years. Only thought of changing it as a safeguard. Put the replacement on but noticed it had a different shape keyway -half circle - and did not turn or move from its base position as I engaged with throttle spindle. It did not move the throttle which was seated ok. When started, idled fast at 2000 + so took it off and thought it best to put the original back. The original has to be turned slightly anti clockwise as one engages to the spindle to allow it to seat and this small turn means that the pot is not quite at the start of its track when screwed into place.. As you know, having put it back exactly as before it then idles faster than before about a 1000 rising to 1500. I drove around hoping it would re-adapt but you say this does not occur with the TPS. Now, having cleaned the idle valve carefully and replaced the crankcase breather hose that fixes near it, it won't idle at all so I don't know what is happening. It was as I was trying to drive under my sun shades which I do slowly lifting as I go with a stick out of the window that I pulled the gatepost down - so this bloody car has a lot to answer for. My knowledge of it is limited because it has worked more or less trouble free for the 11-12 years I have owned it.

Now I have to do the VAT !!! Car has to wait.

S4, you just have to get your head around the fact that the small demon that lives in your engine ECM had adapted your fuelling and timing etc to suit the state that your engine was in before you cleaned one idle air component and replaced what was probably allowing air into your manifold downstream of the MAF.
Once again, the demon will have to slowly do its thing to adapt to the different parameters.

If the tps wasn't genuine I wouldn't entertain it..I fitted a pattern one , was like being kicked up the backside above 50

Ok - I've just realised that the 'Non-adaptation' as you say only relates to the TPS so any other changes can be compensated for - Ah - feel a little better for that - got to look on the bright side - I mean I could have pulled the gatepost (yes I know there is no actual gate) down onto the back of the car...............luckily it missed........back to mr vatman.

Seriously - if any one is tempted to come out here - I can offer sleeping for two (in comfortable private caravan beside house) with all normal facilities in house - food and drink within reason - on a friendly free basis but you 'must love dogs' 'cos there are five of them. I would not insist on the nanocom or trowel because I hope by then everything will be fixed. The accommodation is what you might call 'army' style so not the ritz if your other halves are fussy !

I may be closer than I would normally be but still 1600 kms away from you. Slightly too far for a day trip with the Nano that's in the pocket on the back of the passenger seat....... I'm useless with a trowel though.

That's a long way and tolls and fuel expensive although not so many tolls in Spain. LPG is gradually spreading in Spain - 62 cents a litre but few and far between. My trips back rely on a fill here on coast, then Granada - Madrid - up near Burgos and once into France no problem. Taxis and Ambulances are moving to LPG but few cars are on it. Flying by ryan and easy out of season not too bad.

Have to get Sebastian to fix gate but use money needed for RR !

I wasn't overjoyed with 'Dad my Mondeo stopped working on petrol but will run on LPG except my LPG tank is empty, I know you'e extremely busy but can you bring that full LPG tank from the yard and plumb it to my car so I can get moving again, I'm only 50 miles away' but I couldn't say no.. Cumon Gilbert only a 2000 mile round trip lol ;-)

But I'm at the end of the first leg of a 2,000 mile round trip already! I'm currently on top of a mountain just outside of Nice surrounded by olive trees, the swimming pool is at 28 degrees, the fridge is full of beer (although not quite so full as it was yesterday) and my dinner is in the oven. Give me a few days and I might get bored enough to want to start playing with cars again though.

But I'll let you know how well it holds up by the end of the week. However, as the cars I import come down here I've worked on cars in 35 degree heat and can tell you it isn't a lot of fun. The worst bit is when the sweat runs down your forehead and drips off your eyebrows into your eyes. No cars to work on this time though it's even worse. My mate is away for the week so we're house, chicken, cat and alpaca sitting.....

July and August are hot and only ok if you are by the sea or swimming pool - mainly you get daytime temps around 38 and the Brits and Scandinavians who spend most of the year here go home for the summer months. The coast becomes very crowded with difficulty parking and all the Spanish take their holiday at this time coming from the north. The paint or whatever that sort of varnish is on car paintwork now, blisters off starting in patches and spreading all over the upper surfaces. If I had a little cottage in Salcombe I'd be there even though the weather gets me down. I know this is not strictly forum topic - some filmed from a land rover though - here is a film I did for Honda - just to show you the wild country high up - not so easy to access now as they have restricted vehicles in the 'Parc Natural'

I concur! Last week I swapped the coil on an Austin 7 in 36 degrees. Sweaty!

It still didn't run but it wasn't my diagnosis anyway. You wouldn't think there were enough wires in an Austin 7 for someone to cock it up.
