Why not just call it a 'Rover' - like in the old days ?

Yes, I suppose the Evoque is just the next model up from this.....

Evoque, yuk ! The convertible is worse, it’s a girls car for sure, mrs beckham did a good job, cos there so popular, would I ever own one, no..
I think they’ve got front even putting Range Rover on it.
I...umm...err...rather like the Evoque convertible.
I don't think it should have a Range Rover badge on it (only the ACTUAL Range Rover should, what's this "Sport" nonsense all about?!) but I like how it looks.
Sport = smaller, cheaper version.
Exactly, not really "Range Rover" qualities :P
Whilst I intrinsically agree that the new product offering from JLR has strayed a long way from it's origins, it has to be said that they have done a stellar job in selling product. The older generation Defenders, whilst mustering a large 'cult' following, did not sell in anything like sufficient numbers to keep the company going. Although I personally much prefer the RR2/P38, I'm guessing that I (we on here) are in somewhat of a minority. Also, whilst we are keeping old Rangies on the road, which is great, we aren't doing much to directly help JLR or dealerships, given that most on here seem to do their own spannering and buying parts elsewhere.
What I still find sad is that JLR are still selling vehicles with way too many problems and seem to have a large network of Dealerships that don't really care. I appreciate that they aren't unique in this (and there are always exceptions to any rule) but if Skoda can do it, surely it's about time that JLR got themselves sorted out in that department?
Sorry to steal the thread - as you were!
Not stealing - right on the ball - some of my friendly dealers do not have a good word to say for my beloved P38 - until now the fairly minor problems have been mostly fixed by me but I am a bit stuck so if you can look at my bit on LPG forum any hints would be much appreciated.....chris
I try to buy what I can from the main dealer. I figure that the parts they fitted 17 years ago have lasted 17 years so they just be pretty good.
The biggest issues I run into are lack of availability, monstrous pricing and a lack of knowledge from the parts guys - the car is just too old for them to know anything about.
OTOH, and our local Indy which isn't even a LR specialist they were singing the praises of the P38 vs a disco 2 which was in at the same time.

I tried once.
Went to Land Rover Manila asking for a set of plug leads.
They denied that the P38 ever existed, despite being parked right outside the parts department's window.
"We can do special deal on Evoque, Sir."
Strange, they went bankrupt. Not tried their replacement yet, and probably won't.
'Maffing about' - I know it is probably on wrong topic but would appreciate some advice. Slowly going through all the options to cure my strange runninig/performance problem but before buying a cheap chinese MAF £70 or even an £800 Rover genuine! I tried putting an ohm meter across the various three pins and blew into the entrance with a hair dryer. No change on any readings ! What should I expect if anything ? Taxi to the loony bin ?
Doesn’t the element unscrew ? I know on mine it does and Bosch parts available on eBay, no where near ££££.
I’d be tempted to grab one off one of the breakers rather than sticking a Chinese copy on
Nothing unscrews apart from the wire mesh guard at the entrance - the rest is rivetted in. Mine is a GEMS set up - has to be changed as a complete tube/fixture I think. By the way the breakers are very short of these now and if you find one there is the risk that it is faulty.
Cheapest MAF prices around £30 but dire warnings about chinese copies some of which don't work ! If any one has a spare no longer needed I don't mind paying but it would be helpful if I knew mine was definitely faulty ! Of course, knowing the shortage of some P38 spares you need to keep hold of it !
i've bought a couple used original ones off ebay for mine. Wouldnt trust the chinese ones and the 800quid for a genuine one is ludicrous.
The easiest way to tell if its faulty, is simply to unplug it!
The original one would die once it got hot. you'd get about 15mins driving around, then it would cough splutter fart and die.
The first replacement one (used OE from ebay) worked fine, for about a year, then died without warning, with wild fuel trims and pouring black smoke out the back.
Second replacement one is fine so far.
Thanks Aragorn - I notice that everything seems more or less ok when engine cold and starting - gets worse as heat builds up here in Spain ! So the MAF could be a heat fault. But what should happen when you unplug it - if it is serviceable ? I think I tried that ages ago and the engine then stopped. Have tried all my usual breakers for a genuine one but so far no luck.
By the way - I have 2 TPS bought in error for my P38 (new unused) - one is ERR7322 (discovery/defender ?) and I think the other is for MG/Rover. They cost about £40 but if anyone needs them could I ask a tenner for both and can post to you ?
