Happy New Year folks :)

After replacing lots of steering parts, there's still quite a lot going on under The Duchess.
There's creaking from the back, which I suspect is brake related, but there's also some nastly clunking noises from the front (I'm pretty sure) which seem to be related to moving and/or changing between forward and reverse. If you spin the wheel lock to lock while stationary the steering is silent. There has to be weight on the wheels to get the car to make these noises, I've had some trusted people probe with bars and they can't find any movement.
The only suggestion so far has been "Hockey Sticks" which I take to mean front radius arm bushes - is that correct?

I had the same sort of noises when one of the universal joints began to fail - noticable as a thump when changing direction of travel (forward to reverse, or pulling out of a space when parked).

I would say a UJ , as it’s only when moving, the radius arm bushes would do it just turning the steering without moving ( or at least mine did )

That might also account for the squeaking - mine did squeak at the same time. There was also noticeable play when the propshaft was moved from underneath with the axle lifted so the wheels were off the ground. Having watched again the other possibility I would say would be the cv joint on the driveshaft itself, but in any case I'd expect you'd find some movement there once you find the cause of it.

I'll get wiggling the propshafts and see if it's there. Now you've mentioned UJs I'm wondering if the slight V8 thrum that I've noticed recently is actually nothing to do with the engine...

I'd say propshaft Uj.
I'd check the viscous coupling too :)
