It's bad luck on the oil pressure but you will love the MX5. We've had three and whilst I haven't driven the new one it seems to have returned to the original concept of lightness where the later ones had got a bit fat.

My missus had SEVEN of the little slitty eyed things on the trot! The last two were bought from new and she absolutely loved them. When she traded in No6, it only had 3000 miles on it and the dealer gave her a great price. If I recall correctly, No7 only cost her £1500. She only got rid in the end because of her hands. She struggled to change gear. The last two were 1.8 sports and went like shit off a shovel.

Coming from a P38 and a Freelander it certainly feels like a bit of a rocketship.

If your wife would still like an MX-5 the new one comes with an automatic gearbox :)

I've LPG converted quite a few MX5's and imported Eudos' in the past, not touched one in ages. They always remind me of driving my mates Spitfire 30+ years ago only better in every respect. Not for me but I see the appeal of nimble little lightweight sports cars without massive power and without seat width tyres and wonder if owners of more powerful more expensive sports cars would enjoy chucking an MX5 about more. Not sure if they're still in business but there used to be an MX5 specialist in Conisbrough near me with a showroom full of them.

Kind of going from one extreme to another Rutland? Unless you're planning an RV8 transplant (not from your P38 though lol).

Yeah, it's a bit different. Should be a good bit cheaper to run than the P38 (even on LPG). Got 46mpg on the way home on country roads, having a little bit of fun here and there. Should be able to see 48-50mpg on my commute if I'm sensible.

It's a little bit smaller but we figure we don't really need two family cars as we still have the Freelander on the road. Most of our driving is two people - a commute and dropping off or picking up from nursery.

No engine swaps. At least not until the warranty expires :P

Dunno if this issue was fixed, but mine had this issue and it was the O-ring for the oil pick up pipe, it had turned to Bakelite and wasn't sealing causing oil pressure to bleed out..

It went from 15psi to 45..
