On a P38 Gearbox Fault will come up on the dash if the battery is a bit low. If the voltage drops below 10V while cranking the engine, the gearbox ECU flags it as a fault. So probably nothing to worry about if it has been standing around not being used.

Well Lpgc I hope Tom has all the knowledge that you guys have. He loves the things so I am putting my trust in him as I did with Marty. He did not fail me and I hope Tom won't. He comes well recommended by the P38 owners club.

With the Nano connected you don't get a fault saying "u/s MAF" or similar it just gives strange readings, similar to a ridiculous temperature like -238C. I can't exactly remember off the top of my head.

Well guys. It appears that it was the maf that was causing the power issue. Tom said he noticed a problem almost as soon as he popped the bonnet. The wires to the maf had virtually disintegrated and were coming apart. This was possibly why I had intermittent stalling, which I told the garage about. The "gearbox fault" turned out to be something that had been unplugged. He has driven it for several miles without any hiccups and the mpg has started to come up. I used to get around 23/24.5 mpg but it had gone down to 19. He has given it a good going over. There are some bits underneath that could do with some attention but not immediately. So. Now. Can I trust it?????

Sounds like you know where to take if if it does play up again and you don't want to tackle it yourself, hard for anyone to say if you can trust it without having seen it though.

I do not know OldShep. They certainly appeared to have no idea about the power issue. Whether or not they got it right about the in tank pump or water pump I will never know. I asked Tom if they had sent the components they took off with the car but they have not. They only sent the gismo they took off which they said was to increase power. Maybe for towing. It was naff they said and it was making no difference to the running. Tom has done 75 miles in it and it has not put a wheel wrong. So. Here's hoping!!!

Well. The Beast is back home. Now to try and build some confidence with it. Have to say it is grubby. The steering wheel is very dirty. They do not appear to have taken much care of it. Tom said that the gizmo they took off, which is oily and dirty, was on the seat when it got to him. He had wrapped in some paper towels. Also the engine cover is in the boot. Think I can manage to put that back on.. Here's hoping for some worry free motoring!!!!

That sounds like a great excuse for a road trip!
Glad you've got it back, hope you didn't pay the robbing bastards what they were asking for. It might be worth telling them what the actual fault was and to point out that it was cheap to fix!

Well Morat so far so good. Tom asked me if I had asked them to do anything with the steering as he found a spanner somewhere underneath. I hadnt't but they seem to have tampered with things they did not need to. Why they unplugged the gearbox sensor is a mystery. Apart from the steering wheel being very dirty I found dirty rags and plastic seat covers behind the front seats, what looked like oily marks on the back of the drivers seat and on the carpet on the door and there is a scratch on the body work that I think was not there before. It was so dirty outside that it was not immediately noticable until I got it cleaned and valeted yesterday. Will be contacting them about the state it was in when I am in the right frame of mind!!!!
