Assuming you've fixed all the foibles and you were tempted to do something to your P38 what would it be?

Fit a (working) LPG system.......

Then drive it and never worry about fuel consumption again.

One day, when I get round to it, I'll replace the speakers with modern equivalents. Some of them are definitely past their best now.

JBL Stage 600CE slot straight in instead of the originals, although you have to drill holes in the plastic surround to fit self tappers to hold them in and change the spade terminals in the wires. Sound far better with much improved bass response. I've got 4 of those in the doors (one in each door, not 4 in each door that is) and a Pioneer underseat sub (as mine never had the factory sub) under the back of the drivers seat, sounds wonderful......

The JBLs come with replacement tweeters but I tried one and couldn't hear any difference between that and the originals. So rather than spend time mounting the JBL tweeters, I left the originals. I suspect someone 40 years younger than me would hear a difference as the upper range of hearing diminishes as you get older.

JBL speaker polarity used to be phased opposite to convention, so if you fitted JBLs in the same cab as other brands the JBLs cones would go backwards when others were going forwards. My dad used to rave about JBL speakers in the 70's, fitted them in some of his stage cabs. I've still got some 15" JBLs in custom cabs. Bit of useless info lol.

Yes, that's another thing I'd like to do. Having seen Marty's Android unit I can't really see a downside. The stock Nav is cute, but no longer working. To have Nav fully integrated again would be nice, especially if it's Google Maps which is my preferred option.

Uhm, this is a nice topic ... to bring a P38 to the XXI century after fixing all its issues (that's enough!) and putting all the options/accessories desired, I'd suggest:

  • upgrade headlamps, maybe with suitable LED options;
  • install a BMW coolant tank with sensor and a manual override switch for the A/C fans (because is never enoguh redundancy);
  • improve soundproofing: the base layout is pretty good for a factory car, but there are a lot of resonance/hollow spots to work on;
  • upgrade audio: the speakers are pretty good (at least the high line HK on mine), but the cassette is really outdated ... as mentioned by others, a touchscreen/navi is a nice addition, hands-free for the phone as well;
  • make some sort of holder for the spare when you have LPG tank in its place (like I do);
  • add lighting and tie-down hooks in the luggage area (considering it was a costly accessory and the threaded holes are there from the factory, makes you wonder why them dudes would not do that directly from the go);

Just some of the stuff on my list!
