Oh and the people on here don't give you a bollocking when you ask a question like on LZ.

Welcome Dopey!

I also don't frequent LZ nearly as much, because of W

That and I haven't been on ANY forum in the past few months because I'm away on tour... though I've been laid off for at least 5 weeks, from yesterday due to the coronavirus outbreak... Currently back in New York this week, waiting to find out if I'm going to be flying back to the UK on Friday, or having to hole up somewhere out here until the tour is rescheduled to start... The worry being if I get back to the UK, and then can't get back to the US to restart the tour if there's still a travel ban in place... time will tell...

Re the Police Setting...

I don't think having UK POLICE set without the wiring will screw anything up, as people are led to believe. My 2001 has UK POLICE enabled, and no sign it's ever been a police vehicle. The BECM has no way of knowing if anything extra is connected to my knowledge.

I did find one thing different on mine awhile ago, but can't fully remember what it was - I think it was something to do with being able to have the tailgate open (I presume so that the police officers could get access to their equipment) and still lock the rest of the vehicle, without it thinking it's a mislock and not setting the alarm (so then the rest of the vehicle is secure). Unless there was additional wiring added for the tailgate locking, then even with the rest of the vehicle locked, you still wouldn't be able to open the tailgate, as the switch would still ground through the RHF latch. Maybe that was part of the wiring changes - so that when the vehicle was locked, you could still open the tailgate, but it wouldn't set the alarm off... but without actually being able to see a converted one to see what they did, there's no real way of telling exactly what the setting actually did!

But that aside, I've seen a number of normal P38's (mostly later ones) with UK POLICE set as enabled, and there seem to be no nasty side effects...

I mentioned it earlier (thought it was on this thread but obviously not) that mine, as an ex-police car, did have extra wiring around the tailgate connector, including a switch and a couple of diodes that obviously stopped something from being back fed. The setting may also turn off the blown bulb warnings in some circuits as I found that if you overload a lighting circuit by adding an extra load (in my case by adding a 25W beacon to a tail light circuit), it will flag up a blown bulb warning and shut that circuit down.

Did your ex-Police had some sort of larger mudflaps, possibly rubber, I have seen in some P38s in photos?

It still does, I've left them on as a sort of testament to it's history. They are known as Spray Stoppers and are like doormats on the inside. The only other thing I've removed is the reflective strips down the A pillars and an awful lot of spurious, unused wiring hidden away above the headlining and behind the dash. This is what it looks like now

and this is what it looked like 20 years ago. No reflective strips down the A pillars so they must have been added at a later date.

Only 7k short of 400k. I want to get it up to that before the MoT in August just to impress the tester.....

Not perfect, got a little bit of rust appearing on both rear wheel arches but that's about it really. Everything works too except for the rear washer which clogs up within a couple of days of pulling it out and flushing the pipe through for the umpteenth time.

Mine has/had rust in the rear arches i'm budgeting to get them repaired..

Is the gearbox original?

Yep, original gearbox and transfer case, rear prop, rear axle and wheel bearings although the rear diff has been replaced. Front needed new ball joints and it was easier for Marty to replace them on a spare axle he had so we could just swap the whole lot so it was changed but didn't really need it. If I try very hard (flooring the throttle in Sport at 20 mph) I can make the TC chain skip a tooth so that will need doing some time but other than that it's just routine maintenance and replacing anything as and when it needs it. I suspect the maintenance and regular servicing it got for the first 8 years and 200k of it's life while it was a police car has helped.

The Morse chain in mine does chatter on overrun if you're not careful on the throttle.

The VCU whines too!

needs a rebuilt eventually.

The viscous can be quite dangerous if you leave it as long as me and end up with the front driveshaft falling off on the move. Luckily I was doing 2mph at the time but it could have been a lot worse.

I found that with mine, always the LHS front one and for no reason I could find. Clean it out and blocked within a couple of days. New nozzle, all good, and blocked within a couple of days again. I eventually put on new pipe work and no more problems, so I can only assume the old pipe work on that side was falling apart from the inside out.

I suspect that's what the problem is too but as it's the rear washer replacing the pipework isn't that simple. But no doubt I'll have plenty of time to do it in the next few weeks.

400k! Wow! Compliments ... then they say P38s are born to due early lol ....

So these mudflaps are the "Spray Stoppers" ... been looking for ages for those to see how they really look like. They seem to be larger and more flexible than the original plastic ones, would be perfect for towing in dirty weather. Wonder if any breaker has a set of those .... :-)

They are the same as fitted to trucks but cut to shape. It's these https://www.truckware.co.uk/acatalog/Anti-Spray_Mudflaps_-_Manufactured_by_Clearpass.html

Now you broke the magic lol! I was expecting some fancy unique LRSV item, not a banal truck accessory! Just joking! I will check them out, I already have heavy rubber mudflaps which need to be 'cut to size' but I've not fitted them yet. For a later stage ... thanks!
