As you know I've got a 99 vogue (1 of 30 made in Oxford blue) I've now got a land rover discovery 300tdi 7 seater no sunroof model 🙄 it's mechanically sound just rust ---- quick weld up and then ready for granddaughter 1st car ---- what you guys think ?

Presumably your granddaughter is only 3? It'll take you until she's old enough to drive to deal with the rust.....

My step daughter has claimed the Ascot. Intention was to sell it but as she has now hit 25, although not passed her driving test yet, and has 1 years no claims, she can get insurance of a Classic policy for half what it would cost her on a 1.2 litre shopping trolley. I told her she should really take her test in a manual but she pointed out that almost all the cars we have are auto and more and more modern cars (particularly hybrids and the like) are auto and if she ever does fall in love with something that is a manual she'll just redo her test. Couldn't fault the arguments so it looks like the Ascot has become a permanent fixture.

My granddaughter is 16 now had her moving cars around the yard for a year or so she went to a under 16 driving event ---- instructor said she a natural driver ---- mechanic wise she can do brakes and V8 rebuilds her welding is good as taught her how to do that when she was 12

As someone who owns a Disco..

Check to make sure it doesn't have a window in the floor..

They like to rot, in all the places you don't look!

Sills - bootfloor - arches - front floors - alpine window frames - etec etc

It doesn't matter to me what rust is there as she can help me do it 👍 I did say if the body is totally rusty then put a another body on --- some time ago I put a ford focus on a RR classic --- it's a fun thing for her to do .I'm glad she so eager and not into games and the like ---- most teenagers are not bothering with things like this these days

Bloody marvellous idea. Dont know alot about the 300 thing. Cut my teeth on a TD5 D2. But hell why not stick them in something big with a nice green oval on.

Plus if she can weld then the D1 is a great match

I think this is great! I am in love with your granddaughter! Except that I have the age difference to have her a a daugher ... ah ah :-)
I think is great she likes to tinker with stuff and understand how vehicles operate - makes you a better driver, or a driver, really.
My little one (3 to 4 this year) just sits on my lap and turn the wheel, but is ok. Already knows what screwdrivers and pliers are made for, and I think is a good thing.

I think the D1 300 is a good and balanced car, albeit a bit tractorish, and perhaps sluggish with the auto (is it mechanical injection or the late ones with EFI?). I remember mine fondly, lots of space, very versatile vehicle. I regret selling.
Watch for rust as commented, without sunroofs you got a (big) problem less to worry about.

Leolito that's how Olivia started at about 4 years old ---- before you know it they take over what you are doing 👍 the TDI is manual no ECU on it either ---- it's about as simple as it gets ----- completely opposite of the vogue SE

Only problem is that the D1 didn't have air con. We had one at work from new ('93, 200TDi with twin sunroofs). On a hot day you are driving a mobile greenhouse.....

Ah then - manual and tdi is a tank. All the usual ones (dashboard peeling, input gear, misalignment of the timing chain, sagging headliner, broken plastics, and so on) are all well known and documented, and then let her play :-)

Mine is now 17 and if it weren't for the various lockdowns, she'd have her provisional license now.

I gave her the choice (as I'll be teaching her) of using mine, or her mother's.

There was no hesitation. "Range Rover!"

Good girl.
