I’m looking for a decent set of tyres for the 18” Comets on one of my VSE’s.

Has anybody got any recommendations?

Last time I put tyres on a P38 I fitted Michelin Lattitude Sports but they start to crack fairly quickly.

I've got Vredestein Quadtrac 5 on mine and they are brilliant in all conditions and have lasted very well too (just over half worn after nearly 50,000 miles). They don't appear to make them in the 255/55 x 18 size you need but they do make the Quadtrac Pro which appears to be very similar. An all season tyre but with the 3 peaks marking and winter tread pattern on the inner edge of the tyre which worked very well in snow in Estonia. Superb in the wet too. About a million times better than the Goodyears I had on before......

I have General Grabber AT - a more road biased AT but still good in all seasons and very quiet indeed. Sadly I've worn the shoulders out with the front end shenanigans and they don't make them any more or I'd get another set in a second. I'll be watching this thread!

I went for Goodyear Eagle sport last year, I found 60 series tyres were much more readily available and cheaper so guess what I went for... only issue I have found so far is the spare is a swine to wrestle out of the boot. The speedo' is strangely more accurate now.

Just ordered a set of 5 Grabber AT3s. Not everyone's choice but for me the car is more of a winter car with the odd green lane thrown in.
I will be picking them up fitted to a refurbished set of Mondial wheels on Tuesday they have goodr reviews, better in the wet than I thought.

I'm fitting a set General Grabber GT XL to my P38 tomorrow - the old Grabber AT's were 2009 vintage and starting to craze on the side-walls.
Fingers crossed they're OK - will be 99.9 % road use, just doddering along max 65mph..........................old git.

I like the idea of the Cross Climates being a quieter tyre but I also prefer the idea of the Pilot Sport 4 SUV being better in the wet. In the winter I'd imagine the Cross Climate to be a far better tyre.

I've got the Cross Climates on my Peugeot 407 Coupe which is mapped to 298bhp and they're an excellent tyre for grip and noise so I'm giving some serious thought to the Cross Climates just now.

I'm tempted - as I have them on my Jeep and rate them highly for that application but the Jeep is a very different beast. Could you write a mini review when you get them? pretty please?

I bought an L322 with Grabbers on it and found them to be very noisy.

My P38 is 99.9% road use with the occasional bit of moving a trailer in the field. It’s done 700 miles in 12 months, most of which have been winter miles so the Cross Climate’s should be just the ticket for my usage hopefully.

My GEMS car has Pirelli Scorpions, the STR version (and an ST on the steel spare which was on the n/s front but worn). The Thor has General Grabber GT tyres on it, and there isn't much of a difference betwween those two. Both are on the Discovery-looking wheels for all but spares.

I just put a set of Vredstein Pros on the H&H.
I can only say that these are the best tyres I have had on a vehicle bar none. The road noise is minimal and the vehicle drives so smoothly it is almost incredulous. Maybe this was because I was running on a set of Pirellis that were balder than Telly Salavas head but none the less.....
I paid $175 each for them and they were flitted and balanced for free. Was able to talk them into a free alignment while I was there.

I think I mentioned this elsewhere but seeing as this is an actual Tyre thread:

I went with Cross Climates in the end. In doing so I've decided that the Range Rover is 100% on road and the Jeep can do any offroad tasks with its Grabber AT3.

The Cross Climates are quiet and extremely good in the wet for braking and although we haven't had any proper snow yet (despite everyone else getting it, boo) they've been perfect on super cold frosty, icy mornings. We haven't done much driving in the dry recently (or much driving at all, of course) but I did some full ABS stomps on the brake pedal and I was impressed at the rate stuff started flying round the cabin. If we have a summer this year, I'll report back! So far they're shaping up to be a nice on-road tyre for all conditions.

I used mine on Cross Climates to tow the caravan during the summer and was as impressed with them then as you are with them now. I don’t think you’ll regret that decision.

The road manners of mine are definitely not what they should be, especially when well loaded, and have been dropping off over the last couple or three thousand miles. Bump steer and tilt steer effects plus general skittishness. ABS cutting in when it shouldn't too.

I figure the 9 year old Gabber HTS tyres are past their sell by date with around 4.5 mm of tread left despite having covered less than 30,000 miles.

Time for new Vredesteins I thought but they don't do the 255/65 R16 size called for in the book. 235/70 R16 they do do but RAVE says 255/65 are the size despite being 8J rims which, officially, should carry 225 or 235 although a maximum of 245 is permitted. 255 should go on 9J.

Presumably there is a reason why the official fitment is oversize.

Do I go for 235/70 R16 Quatrac 5 as per the Vredestien list, find some 18" wheels so I can use 255/55 Pros or settle for something different.

Gonna be a pain binning the unused spare but I don't trust the Grabbers any more.
