Hi, thanks for all the good replies, especially Gilbert and the explanation on import/ export. The VAT and tax issues are a tricky mess.
Even in Northern Ireland VAT will be charged on items arriving from the UK, and cars comes under that banner. It is really mixed up, I think that it is something like this - if you import a vehicle that has to have VAT on it [perhaps only commercial vehicles] then sell it in the North then you have to pay VAT, but provided it is exported south of the border then you don't pay VAT. However the buyer in the south will have to pay Irish VAT.
I haven't got a real understanding of it all yet, but I have put off buying anything for my P38, or my Merc W126 500, for the moment. There is so much tomfoolery going on with the North, now the EU food inspectors at Larne port are coming under threat for checking food products coming in from the UK to Northern Ireland.
In all honesty the Tories didn't have a clue what the result of the last-minute Brexit agreement really means. For all the demands about fishing rights [ and it seems the UK only uses about 2% of the fish the UK fleets catch ] Scottish seamen can't sell and export shellfish to Europe. Or, they can but the shellfish will no longer be fully fresh by the times it arrives at its destination. Crazy stuff. Half of all trucks are leaving the UK and returning home empty because of the problems with paperwork and certs of origin.

I am not the greatest supporter of Elon Musk after his mad idea to invest $1.5 billion into cryptocurrency, thereby giving it acceptability. Now some American bank has said that they will deal with crypto. I do think that crypto is a big, big issue as it is not backed by any real security such as gold. Admittedly, the UK pound is no longer backed with 700 tonnes of gold, after the Labour government flogged most of it, but at least it is supported by government bonds. The only people who seem to use cryptocurrency appear to be criminals, drug-dealers, and dodgy dealers of all things.
So I won't be buying a Spacex space rocket, anyway I probably wouldn't be able to buy a replacement traction battery for it here in Ireland.
I am thinking about investing my pension in donkeys, as a hedge [get it ????] against no more petrol or diesel !!!!

The biggest problem with this situation is that it is all half baked and bought in at the last minute so nobody really understands what they need to do. I was recently asked if I could collect a UK registered car that the UK resident owner had left at his holiday home in France but been unable to get there because of Covid restrictions. Phoned Customs to ask what paperwork I would need to be told that as long as I had the V5 to show the owner as being a UK resident and an email from him asking me to collect it for him, it wasn't a problem as I was repatriating it not importing it. So next time I go over, which will be as soon as travel restrictions are lifted, rather than take my ham and cheese sandwiches, I'll take the component parts. Bread isn't a problem but if I take Lurpak butter (made in Denmark), Leerdammer cheese (made in Holland) and find some meat marked made in EU so I can claim that I'm repatriating it rather than importing it......
Anyway, back on topic. Pierre, this thread isn't to slag off diesels or their owners, each to his own. It highlights some of the modified, pimped or Gansta stylee additions that some people have inflicted on poor unsuspecting cars. You know the sort of thing, 22" wheels and rubber band tyres, L322 front end kits and Sport side grilles along with hideous paint jobs and poor taste interiors. Oddly, it seems that quite a few of these alterations (for want of a better word) have been done on diesel versions. Maybe it's because they don't usually fetch such good prices as a V8 or they've previously been used as a workhorse so aren't really suitable for restoration to good condition. To me it seems to be the same mentality as the kid who has a car worth £500, spends the same again on ill fitting, totally unsuitable, body mods and then expects to sell his 'exclusive modified' car for 4 times what it is actually worth.
Hi, I know there isn't any slagging off of different owners opinions, I have never come across any of that here [unless someone was really, really dumb], but it is always nice to see someone pointing it out.
I wouldn't mind a V8 but as a retiree with a finite pension pot I can't afford the Irish road tax !! I don't mind the lower amount chargeable on a 2.5 but not €3000 a year for a 4 litre. I suppose, if I am honest, I would find it difficult to maintain a petrol RR because I am no longer as mentally agile, or physically flexible, to deal with leaking oil pump seals, or dodgy fuel metering. At least the diesel is fairly reliable, and I have some knowledge of diesel engine having used various ones for work for 20 years.
I worry, sometimes, if my Merc does something a bit strange because that, also, is a V8. I would have to take it to a friend of mine if it develops engine problems, but up until now it has been as good as gold. I just hope that it stays that way.
Just as an aside, I have been in the habit of sending a wine box sized parcel to my daughter in Edinburgh about every 6 months, with clothes and toys for her children, using the DPD parcel service, but when I looked this evening to see how much it would be I have found that they have stopped shipping to the UK for the foreseeable future. It was an excellent service, about €20 for up to 5 kilo's, so it was cheap and convenient, drop-off at a local shop and two day delivery. If I send a similar 3 kilo parcel through the Post Office here it will cost about €50. So, another unexpected issue caused by Brexit.
Now I'm off to feed my donkey which I bought second hand off a Romanian gun-runner, on the black interweb thing. uh-oh, just noticed a blue flashing light outside my house - gotta run................................................

Other half wanted to send a parcel to a friend in Holland last week. Initially the price quoted by DPD was the cheapest but then directed her to the prohibited items list. See https://www.dpdlocal-online.co.uk/prohibited-items, they'd do better giving a list of what you can send! Parcelforce had the usual stuff listed but nothing like as much.
I'd rather fault find on a V8 than a diesel having seen some of the threads about fuel injection pumps. Seems to me that while it's working it's fine but when it stops, or starts to leak or loses it's timing, it's mega money to fix.
I bought a pair of trousers online from Germany 10 days ago. They arrived three days later with no extra charges to pay. I was fully expecting to experience yet another horror story of delays and import duties but it seems that trade can be done. I think the difference is that the company in question (Hirmer) is used to dealing worldwide already so they just moved the UK from their EU process to their RoW process and carried on as normal.

The tailgate "rubbish holder" is actually a fair idea, but it does require a lot of sheetmetal trimming to make it work ... and nevermind the usefulness, you can store only something long/large, light, and not bulky, like an umbrella or triangle ...

It is a Japanese import, as well. I know this guy quite well, he imports lots of stuff from Japan, but he does deal a lot in used P38's from Japan. Having had a couple of imported Isuzu Troopers in the past [worth every penny and more] I know that imports often have all manner of strange things fitted, such as that funny looking box beside the radiator in the pictures of the P38 here.
Imports can be very good value but you can't check the mileage, for instance, and it can be difficult to find out how many previous owners. Other things like different lubricants and greases don't help, plus the radio always needs changing, the diesels need a modification to the exhaust system as the Japanese recycle the exhaust through the engine [I think it is] and on UK diesel you get black smoke when you accelerate hard. It is easily sorted, but still another job.
I also think that the aircon works at different temperatures as I could never get my Troopers to get particularly warm in winter. A bit odd really.
But still good buys depending on what you look for.

As most of you know I've spent a lot of time playing with imports and while most were from USA, EU and, in a few cases, Russia, I've currently got a Japanese import Audi RS5 sitting outside the house. Every other Audi for every other market allows you to switch the digital speedo between miles and kilometres and to be able to switch the HID headlights to dip left or right. Not the Japanese ones and I've spent half the day at an Audi indie and it appears we are going to have to reflash the whole system so I can get a speedo in miles to get it through the IVA test.
