Thanks Gilbert's. I thought it was possibly the BeCM. This damn car is a nightmare.

My wipers have an intermittent problem when, although they are working, they are not doing what they should be. When I push the stick upwards they should sweep across once. They might and they might not. They may stop half way across the screen. Same with other positions. May or may not do what they should. Also intermittent alarm fault message and ignition key in when it is not. When that happens it won't lock. Have to shove the key in the ignition and out again. It is never ending with this vehicle

Well Morat so far so good. Tom asked me if I had asked them to do anything with the steering as he found a spanner somewhere underneath. I hadnt't but they seem to have tampered with things they did not need to. Why they unplugged the gearbox sensor is a mystery. Apart from the steering wheel being very dirty I found dirty rags and plastic seat covers behind the front seats, what looked like oily marks on the back of the drivers seat and on the carpet on the door and there is a scratch on the body work that I think was not there before. It was so dirty outside that it was not immediately noticable until I got it cleaned and valeted yesterday. Will be contacting them about the state it was in when I am in the right frame of mind!!!!

Well. The Beast is back home. Now to try and build some confidence with it. Have to say it is grubby. The steering wheel is very dirty. They do not appear to have taken much care of it. Tom said that the gizmo they took off, which is oily and dirty, was on the seat when it got to him. He had wrapped in some paper towels. Also the engine cover is in the boot. Think I can manage to put that back on.. Here's hoping for some worry free motoring!!!!

I do not know OldShep. They certainly appeared to have no idea about the power issue. Whether or not they got it right about the in tank pump or water pump I will never know. I asked Tom if they had sent the components they took off with the car but they have not. They only sent the gismo they took off which they said was to increase power. Maybe for towing. It was naff they said and it was making no difference to the running. Tom has done 75 miles in it and it has not put a wheel wrong. So. Here's hoping!!!

Well guys. It appears that it was the maf that was causing the power issue. Tom said he noticed a problem almost as soon as he popped the bonnet. The wires to the maf had virtually disintegrated and were coming apart. This was possibly why I had intermittent stalling, which I told the garage about. The "gearbox fault" turned out to be something that had been unplugged. He has driven it for several miles without any hiccups and the mpg has started to come up. I used to get around 23/24.5 mpg but it had gone down to 19. He has given it a good going over. There are some bits underneath that could do with some attention but not immediately. So. Now. Can I trust it?????

This is great place. I love reading all the info guys put on here. It is go to get new members. Welcome.

Well Lpgc I hope Tom has all the knowledge that you guys have. He loves the things so I am putting my trust in him as I did with Marty. He did not fail me and I hope Tom won't. He comes well recommended by the P38 owners club.

Sorry. HOPPY not Holly. Damn predictive txt!!!!!

Hello Holly. That lump of metal is now with Tom. Strange you should mention a gear box fault. Mine now appears to have that as well as everything else that is wrong with the stupid thing.

Yes Marty, I thought if there was a problem with the FIP it would be still under warranty but they say they did not touch the actuator apart from taking it off to fix the leak, so not covered under their warranty. It would have been good if you could have taken a look but don't worry about it. I would have liked to see how they reacted if you had turned up. Hopefully Tom is as good as everyone says and he will get to the bottom of the problems. I told him he is a nutter, having got 5 of his own, but he seems to have a real passion for them. I am sorry you have not got yours sorted yet but I do have to say, from the look some of your pics, it did look a bit of a mess. The sad thing about mine is that it is a nice looking vehicle and nice to drive,.........when it has not got yet another problem. There cannot be much more that can go wrong but maybe that is wishful thinking.

When it went to the garage it had a problem with lack of power when moving off. There had never been any overheating before and the first I knew about that was when it was referenced in the estimate. There was no reference to a repair. Today was when they told me they had replaced the pump. Yes of course it would have needed to be done, but they could have asked. That is all I am saying. I think they are getting enough money from me ,for fixing problems that were not in evidence when it went there. The issue with it struggling to build up speed still remains, as far as I know, and it needs and actuator which is no longer in production.

Well I don't think I want to get into a slanging match with them ,but maybe will test the ground on that one. It is being moved on Weds. Hopefully Tom will be able to look at it next week and see just what is going on with all these things deciding to stop working all in a very short space of time. The original problem is still there and it is odd that they did not get the fault code that my local garage did. The ones they say came up do not seem to tell much but hey ho what do I know.

Well. Have got my final bill. £1,109.12p I did not know about it overheating until they sent the estimate. I found out today that they have replaced the water pump. Another £175 plus £52 for the pump. I realise it needed replacing but they could have asked me about doing it. Anyway. Damn job done! The fault codes they have provided look a bit like a joke, but you guys might know different.
29 unknown fault
25 glow duration
23 battery voltage low
136 fuel distribution circuit faulty

Good grief Hoppy. That must have been frightening. It does show though how, when we put trust in garages to do things right, things can go horribly wrong. I am glad you were ok.
Well Gilbertd. I have had my useless lump of metal for nearly 4 years. Well I have owned it for that time, but a lot of time has been spent at various garages. No garage seems to have a clue about these damn vehicles. I think I know more about them now thanks to guys like you, than garages do, but they have not taken much notice of what I have said in the past. I get things fixed and start to get a modicum of confidence, then something else goes wrong and I am back to square one. My last RR ( The beast) was great and never let me down, and I trusted it implicitly. This thing I have now??? Don't think I will ever trust it or have any confidence in it.

Thanks Mukiwa. I have asked them what diagnostic machine they used and what codes they found but they have not been forthcoming with that nugget of info.
The battery on it is, I am pretty sure, 1000cca and, according to Powerdrive it starts like new!!!! To be fair starting had never been an issue until recently, which they put down to the intake pump problem. It was, the lump of metal's only saving grace because the damn thing kept letting me in other areas. I have ZERO confidence in it and wish I had never bought the useless thing. Apologies to you guys that are in love with them. Tom, who is going to give it a good going over, is absolutely nuts. He has 5 of the stupid things. He is called absolute landrovers. More like absolute nuts!!!!!!

Thanks Hoppy. The chappie at Powerdrive said the code I gave them, which my local garage picked up, did not relate to the FIP but to the intake one. How do I argue the point? I don't know if it really was faulty. If you look further back in he chat there is the "estimate" they sent me. It looks like they have charged £170 labour to replace the in tank pump and 2 glow plugs and £287.55 for the pump and £24.72 for the plugs. From your info it seems rather extortionate! Their estimate for the "work" carried out is £920.72. I asked what diagnostic machine they used and the codes they found They have not provided either. The code the garage told me was Fault code 1 fuel quantity adaptation. Does that relate to the FIP? I don't know and nor does anyone else it appears.

Well. Just caught a film of Woody Woodpecker. The guy on there does not have a problem with his getting RR around. He tows it around with his very big RV. So........all I need now is a trailer and an RV. Problem solved!!!!!!!😛🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸🤸

Mmmm He certainly seems to have a passion for these things. I told him he was f........ing nuts having 5 of them. He got his interest in them when working at a land rover garage. He said the boss person used to go and cry in a corner when he saw a P38 going into the garage!!!!!! Can't say say I blame him. If you want to look at his details he is Absolute Land rover Billingshurst.

Well I think I have decided the way forward. Will source transport and send it to Tom. He seems to be real passionate about these lumps of metal, and like you guys says get it back from Portsmouth. Hope I am doing the right thing!!
