I assume that his intention going by his first post - but until he has the means to do so, why not have a guess? We're going to know definitively soon, I'm sure he'll wait till then!
It's quite easy to reach. It's the one with a blue plug.
Yep - there should be a sensor clipped to one of them. If its fallen off, then reattach with a cable tie if the clip is broken. If its still attached but faulty, it'll show up on diagnostics as logging a fault (and probably giving a weird value).
Coolant temperature sensor would be my bet. The one on the supply pipe to the heater matrix, nothing to do with the engine.
I can't remember if there is logic that expects it to see at least a certain temperature after a period of time, but it rings a bell.
A slight tangent but relevant thought came to mind...
In a couple of years time... this current crop of small turbo petrol engined cars are going to become the cheap affordable new/old/used Saxo or Corsa equivalents... we're going to be hearing crappy aftermarket blow off valves everywhere...
In addition to the obligatory paint can exhausts, of course.

The AMG soundtrack can only be likened to pornography, though. A couple of years ago I was overtaken on some forest roads by an E63. Twice. He was clearly just hooning around - and why not with that spectacular sound and power.
The smell is annoying. Seems to be improved on new cars though too - but then you end up with DPFs or piss injection to deal with particulates and it is just another thing that can and does go wrong.

The power delivery on a modern diesel is pretty much like a petrol - even my 2002 530D has no noticeable turbo lag. 6 cylinders are nice and smooth, and aren't an offence on the ears. But that's about it - it certainly isn't fun to listen to. I love pootling about in my P38 with its lack of middle silencer - it isn't quick, but I like to think I'm providing a public service by providing the roads around here with such a nice sound.
Damn. I must admit... if I were ever to change from my P38, it would have to be for a 540 or M5... Still have my 530D but it isn't exactly an inspiring soundtrack!
You had the moving rear view mirror too?
I presume you personally strung up the tit that rear ended that car?
And then it will only move to where you want it to automatically if the potentiometers in the mirror motor unit haven't failed, which they probably have.
Sadly they're not a replaceable item and I've yet to find a source of replacements.

Such a relief when it finally stayed quiet and reported no faults, that's for sure.
Disable the superlocking motors by cutting one of the wires in each door. I've done this because I want the ultrasonic sensors inside activated when I lock the car - which only happens when its superlocked, but I don't want to risk getting a door stuck superlocked (again...).
The car doesn't know any better whether the superlocking motors work or not. I see it this way - if someone really wants something from inside the car, they're going to smash windows to gain access anyway.
If the clutch engaged with a hole in the condenser, then either someone has screwed around with the wiring, or the pressure switch responsible is faulty. There cannot be refrigerant under pressure in an open system bar vapours in the lines. The pressure switches are on the high side of the system, where there will be zero pressure above atmosphere.
Back to OP though, you may have a blocked expansion device in the evaporator, though if you did, I would expect the pressure to build up very quickly to the point the high pressure cut off stops the compressor running. If the clutch is now not engaging though I'd still say its just losing gas at a rate the low pressure has stopped it running. I'd take a look if you weren't at the wrong end of the country :)
Have it recovered, have a nitrogen test done at 3-400psi (simulating high side operating pressure throughout), then if that passes the soapy water spray test on everything accessible and the pressure doesn't drop after leaving it some time, have it charged up correctly to the plated charge. A vacuum test can pull small leaks closed, especially on perishable seals like the o-rings.

Note to self.. before deeming the shock as not compressing entirely, make sure you've pulled the airline to the correct airbag first... whoops.

If he has the usual condenser hole, there will be no gas, and the compressor shouldn't run at all. The fact that it is and the discharge line is getting hot suggests it is compressing something. Took a look at a friend's Polo at work today, and it is doing the same thing.. discharge is very hot, but there is no cooling effect and the suction line is ambient. It's got a leak, but it hasn't yet lost quite enough to trip the low pressure cut off.
It's under this magical 'warranty' thing though, being 18 months old, so what looks to be a leak on the condenser will be VW's problem.
What Aragorn said - the early cars that drove the compressor clutch directly from the HEVAC will throw a book if the gas is low. Later cars that drive it through a relay had this 'check' programmed out in the HEVAC (because the load of a relay coil being far less than that of the clutch).
That's why you can't put a relay on an early HEVAC without a big resistor to dump current into (part of the factory loom fix/upgrade thing), and similarly can't put an early HEVAC into a late car. You could put a late HEVAC into an early/no relay car though and it will work, and you won't get a book if the gas is low enough to not run.
I think I'd rather have new ones than used, maybe I'll get some Britpart ones.
