Kind of you to understand that it's not that easy to recognise where an intermittent fault comes from. I did think of starting it in the dark to see any spark flashes but never quite managed to stagger out to the car after the bottle of wine......
I said the same as you about diffs etc but Mark said in low range it has a 'limited slip mode' which causes lock up on a dry road. He said never use it (unless you are in a swamp) as it causes damage and bad lock up. This was the advice they gave all their drivers !

No only two on this wheel at this time. I did away with the security nuts because they were more trouble than worth. All my nuts have a loose casing on the outside and I have replaced on another wheel a couple that were damaged after a visit to the bloody tyre idiots, I'm sure it is their use of a wrong socket OR the socket is not full home and vibrates off when they tighten ! If the ones on my old classic are the same I will use those - if I can get the damaged ones off as no socket will fit now !

I hardly dare post this as I don't want to offend the gods who control my P38 but it seems that after two years of boring everyone with my running problem I may have the answer. I have found here in Spain a fabulous 'mobile mechanic' called Mark who is ex Army REME and knows Landrovers/Range Rovers inside out. Stuck on a sloping dirt track and unable to leave it at the garage guy in town Mark came out with all the kit to work in the field. Changed the gearbox oil and internal filter, engine oil and filter - replaced the thermostat and then cast an expert ear on the running. Misfire on the left side he said and most likely a spark plug. I had explained that for no apparent reason after starting and running cold ok it would lose power as soon as the engine gained any heat and run slow up hill, not changing down unless I pushed the Sport button and even then still trying to change up after a few seconds. He would have started on the spark plugs but knowing I could do that I pushed him on to the nasty jobs that I didn't like. So had the spark plugs out left hand side- all looked good - LPG seems to burn clean-and just for trial replaced the old plugs that were still around - went for test drive and on the hill coming back engine failed to a tickover. When finally back replaced the original plugs and noticed that the rubber part of the lead on the one at the back of the engine seemed to be very tight against that metal exhaust manifold that I'm told is a heat shield. Got out the hammer and bashed the shield down out of the way of the plug lead - went for test drive and lo and behold - actually drove like it should - accelerated and changed down as normal - almost perfect - after two years of limping around .... Anyway, Mark says because I use low ratio on the hill here (not really necessary) it causes wind up and wind up inhibits the automatic gear change. I used low range to get home up the hill sometimes because of the lack of power ! I also asked if the ECU had adjusted to my fault/problem and therefore was going to continue feeding wrong settings to fuel etc. He said disconnect the battery for 30 mins and this should reset the system. I know you will think I'm a plonker for not recognising a misfire but when it happened I just didn't know what was causing it and changed MAF, TPS etc etc. So I was bemoaning the fact of being in Spain and not being able to get hands on help from you forum people but now maybe I can stay here ! Oh, got a puncture coming back from the test drive ............so life is not perfect.....

The wheel nuts on my P38 have a sort of shiny metal shell on them and after trips to the tyre repair/change place I find this outer casing distorted and my supplied wheel wrench doesn't fit !! I think the tyre people are using the wrong size socket with extreme force which buggers up the hexagonal shape of the nut. Anyone else had this ? Also, I notice that the wheel nuts on my Classic look the same nut - can they be interchanged ?

Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction - mine would have lasted better except for rough country, dogs and rats !

Yes - now know that the torn off and broken mud flap was done by one of my trusty dogs trying to get at rats in the valance that runs along the bottom of the car. Stopped her just in time - she would have had the whole plastic strip off ..........what a life - I can't take the stress ......

RATS - Going to stuff their favourite corner of the P38 where the loom is their dining room with those stainless steel kitchen scouring pads - I know they can bite through anything but I reckon it will keep them away from that vital area - might confuse them ...............

RATS AGAIN Ok - I know it is not a Range Rover but my poor old Peugeot 309 1.6 is parked next to them and despite traps and checks found last night that the little buggers have moved into the Air cleaner - made a lovely home out of the filter paper and bred four little bastards (no wedding rings). They have also chewed holes in the plastic air cleaner housing and tube to the carb. So, can anyone suggest a good Peugeot Breaker who might have a 1991 - 309 1.6 petrol air filter case and associated plastic cap to carb ?

A year or two ago I was with 'More Than' and almost all my life had been with the Royal from which I think it merged. Max no claims but about three or four years ago it rocketed up every year on my P38 from about £300 to £600 for no apparent reason. So I changed to Admiral and was offered about £320 which I was happy to accept. Insurance renews in about 4 weeks so was waiting to see what would happen and today got an email quoting renewal actually £10 or so lower for the year !! Is this normal or a trick and does the big hit come next year ? Otherwise I suppose I would recommend Admiral.

Thanks Gilbert and Clive. Bit of a shock really ! The Army trained me to drive 4 wheel drives but the pension does not allow for running range rovers. Yes I can see that the metal fittings might be a problem. Ok, back to the un-smart rough road stuff .......

Gosh - what a lot of writing on such an innocent bit of plastic ! Got to throw in my oar. My cap is the original - 10 years old now - came with the kit - fits perfectly - sometimes a job to unclip when mud and stuff jams it and only once did I nearly leave it behind but by chance realised and went back for it ! And there's more ! One day at the pump I found that some other poor bugger had left his behind, so I have a spare ..................

My P38 Mud flaps have finally bitten the dust - I think the one broken off tonight beside the car looks as if some four legged attacker might have been at it and I don't mean the rats ! Anyway, although they are a bit of a stupid thing to have on a cross country vehicle they do look good on the P38 so am I going to be able get new ones at a reasonable price or is it a trip round the breakers ?

Hi George - not as bad as first feared. I mistook some of the casings they had chewed as part of the high pressure pipe and when I got all the rubbish out found that they had only attacked the main loom and eaten through the repairs I did before. Only one wire was eaten - the Gearbox Overheat warning and having repaired that the message has gone from the dashboard. That corner on my RHD P38 is a perfect nesting site and I have to find some way of covering the loom or making the area a forbidden zone. Last year they attacked the injector leads and I repaired those hoping I did it right because the addition of LPG injector leads make it a right buggers muddle. If I got one wrong (ie. 2) would it cause my current poor performance and reluctance to change down when needed on the auto gearbox ?

Thanks George - will try - but here so dusty the under bonnet area is like a sand pit. Here is a pic of 'work in progress' - taken two days to repair the same area as before. Rats

Have bought a replacement pipe from Bob at Hi-Range for £20 in case. He always seems to have spares when I call. tel 01283792302

Have tried that - they seem to come back for more and it blows around the engine. I have two rat traps - the wood and spring kind but they seem to avoid them - these spanish rats are very clever ......my dogs chase them up olive trees and usually I have to climb up and rescue the dog !!! I can see now that A is the high pressure side with nibbles and is not easily available from suppliers. Perhaps it will have to be a scrap part. Also, looks like a major job to remove that whole metal gadget under the reservoir !

Not sure how to make pic appear if one adds in the edit so putting it in again ! enter image description here

Ok Gilbert - I think they have got through what must be the outer cover when I looked with the torch but there is no leakage. I can see that the high pressure side with metal junction is the 3/8 diameter pipe that appears pointed to in my pic by the yellow triangle pointer on the top of the dome and then goes out of sight below the reservoir? . Raining again so it will have to wait but that is just when the little blighters seek a home in the P38 !

I have marked the nibbled pipe with A - the pipe B is not a problem. But where does the A lead to as I can only see it goes out of sight under the reservoir stuff. !
