I'm home, well I've been home a while but been watching the Austrian GP. I must admit that I completely forgot about picking up Chris's tools that he left behind which would have been ideal as I spend at least 3 days a week running up and down the M11 between Peterborough and East London. I could have chucked them into the shrubbery at the Harlow roundabout on my way by if nothing else.

A good fun weekend where we had rather a lot of P38's in varying states of dismantling at times and also spent a lot of time shifting a 3 wheeled Discovery around the place. At least it gave my ex-plod the chance to relive it's previous life by dragging heavy lumps of immobile vehicle around the place on the end of a bit of string. Miles (Morat), the cook Meister, ensured we didn't go hungry with his skills on the barbecue while Marty taught us all a few new words while trying the get the steering arm off the steering box. Eventually brute force and a very large hammer did the trick. Mark (Orangebean) still had no drivers seat when I left and Nick (Sloth) proved just how many bits of a P38 you can cram into another one.

One thing we didn't do was line all the cars up for a photo, but hopefully someone will have taken some even if I didn't......

A great weekend! Good to finally put some faces to names too.

That steering arm... I think enough has been said about that little part!

Well that was a laugh :-) nice to meet you all and thank you for being so welcoming. I was very glad to cook, I'm very little use with a spanner (unless it needs cleaning)

I've now got working Cruise Control (thanks Richard!) working ABS/TC (thanks Marty!) and I've got a few things to look at to maybe get a step ahead - starting with tracking!

Special mention to Chris for explaining things slowly and carefully for the hard of understanding ;-)

I'm also much happier with the EAS which still had a mind of its own but at least it isn't as likely to strand me as I first feared....

I hope Mark got home without having to sit on a stool. I felt a bit guilty (well, maybe a tiny bit) leaving first but the run back to Yorkshire was pretty smooth and I was back by 1930.

So, thank you Marty for organising a really fun scrap moving... Err... P38 party weekend and I'm all up for another one sometime! Now, I just need to go and polish that collet....

A first for me was the mini- convoy of P38s along the farm tracks/ greens "short-cut" back to Wroughton. Don't think I've even followed 1 P38 on the road before so a chance to get slightly muddy in the company of others was great. <br>
Now to the awards (every event should have them) <br>

  • Marty- the Golden Host award. Happy to share his space and knowledge and remarkable for not ever swearing, whatever the provocation.
  • Chris- the Thor award for most creative use of multiple hammers <br>
  • Richard- the Stud award. He could pull anything
  • Miles- the Keith Floyd award for the most relaxed cook with the shiniest tool
  • Nick- the Parker award. Who'd have thought you could park one P38 inside another?
  • The Disco Owner- the Iron Man award for providing the 3 legged Discovery for us to drag around pointlessly all weekend <br> <br>

We also seem to have worked out the essential toolkit for a P38 owner. Going on what seemed to be used most, it was Marty's big club hammer (for hitting anything that should move but wouldn't), my nylon faced mallet (for knocking ABS sensors back into their housing) and my Stanley knife (for opening burger packages, cutting strings of sausages into individual sausages, for cutting the ends off split cruise control hoses and cutting out bits of Mark's carpet). So it seems that a Stanley knife is the most essential tool followed closely by two big hammers........

In a late entry for the Awards, I'm taking the unusual step of proposing myself:

  • Mark- Absent Minded Tw@t award. For leaving behind in the workshop the tailgate trim, inner tailgate cross trim including brake light, a whole box (or bag) of stuff containing an engine wiring loom, and probably any other trim bits that Nick brought up on Saturday! <br> <br> <br>

Sorry - I haven't meant to just go completely quiet on everyone now it's over!!

Thanks all for coming along - those that came one day, and both days alike.
My only regret was that we couldn't get a lineup picture of all the P38's together - as I am sure (even with the green one, and my 2 restoration projects...) that we had about 9 of them there at one point! Which I think is a fairly rare occasion, given how many seem to get scrapped for no apparent reason!

Also, other than Grrrrrr/Jules who came to visit on the second day - I think we are all doing pretty bloody well (and disproving the naysayers out there) by having V8's on LPG...

I will keep Chris' tools (big spanner and smaller ratchet spanners) aside until we can next reunite them to him.

I also look forward to the next one - and the fact that there won't be a disco there to move! Though next time there will probably only be one workshop bay, as I'll definitely have one of the project P38's in bits by then! And chances are the green one will still be there... though if I end up buying it out, my aim will be to get it finished, cleaned, MOT'd, and sold before winter... not sure how that will work out, given my work schedule for the next 6 months, but I can try!

Miles - I haven't forgotten about the switchpack... I will drop you a PM/email at some point about it and we can work out a plan. I think Nick mentioned to me something about your front locks aswell?

Thanks all for coming, and apologies about having to move the disco... twice... I really had hoped that it would have been gone by the time we were wanting to be there!

Actually Mark, I was going to propose you for the Ideal Home Interior Design award for converting the interior of your car from something almost as doggy looking as mine to something approaching a Miles standard of cleanliness.

I have actually promised Dina that before we go on holiday in it at the end of August, it'll have the interior cleaned, the headlining stuck back on (she'll probably do that for me) and a respray. Then nobody will recognise it......

I'm afraid I have an admission to make. The Summer Camp has inspired me. Last night I attacked my drivers seat with foam cleaner to get it the same colour as the others and I've ordered a headlining kit to do something about the flapping curtains that are currently dangling above my head. You never know, I might even get around to washing the mud off it soon too.......

Now I have the workshop space to myself, my other RR's are in there - so being able to use the space when they are in bits, might be a bit interesting - but will see how we go!

One thing I learnt, was don't wash ya car then fly up the dirt road, gonna make sure I come in the back way next time, lol..
Just a thought, does anyone have a decent sat nav disc or can let me know what is compatible, mine was loaded in the 15 th century I think, worse than crap, keeps sending me the wrong way, grrr

They are a special mode2 disc and can be a pain to burn sometimes.

I have a 2011/2012 map which I've burnt for a few people now - if anyone wants a copy then let me know.. I'm heading away for work again this weekend, but can make a list and do some when I'm back.

I'll also have a look and see if I can find the map files anywhere for later then then, and can make them available too if needed...

Hi Marty - would appreciate some help. Have P38 Gems here on the mountain in Spain - LPG stopped working - just doesn't change on the button press - waits then beeps to make me press back to petrol. Have finally got the ECU lead from UK and downloaded Zavoli Alesei N software which loads and seems to work on my Win XP desktop (not connected to car) but does not run on my old laptop on Win 2000 . Says various dll files missing. Do you know if it should run or is Win XP the earliest ?
