Is that the official diagnosis or were they just taking the piss cause it's a diesel? lol

At least your headlinings good though. Might have to go it alone and do mine. Had a little patch when I bought it that seems to have spread rather rapidly across the back.

They wouldn't, surely. Would they?

Father in law has a diesel. Sounds like an old LDV Convoy van. Takes ages to start on a morning too. Turning over forever and then won't pull up hills til it's good and warm.

Is the headlining a nightmare to do then?

It's not a nightmare to do - easy enough to get the headlining card in and out...

The biggest 'problem' if you like is getting the fabric stretched just right and stuck down so that it doesn't bubble or crease.
Other than that... a piece of piss

Isn't yours a dse ? They only have 6 cylinders. Smoke could be dodgy injectors or blocked egr valve, I'd go for the second option first..
If it's a petrol and you need a coil pack to test I have both a gems and Thor set, both with good leads.

Hope you guys are having fun, I'll be at the next one for sure, just bad timing as my other half has stolen my motor and gone to wales..

Sorry, it is a DSE. It was the only one there and they attacked it like the smallest bird in the nest, the bastards! 😁

It's awfully quiet here this morning :) nice to have a tailgate I can sit on again even if it doesn't close without having to clear the straps!

Just got home but no, there wasn't anyone there at 09:16. Smiler had gone home for the night and had an hours drive to get back there, Morat, Orangebean, Dina and me were enjoying the full English at the hotel and the fact that he wasn't there dispelled the rumour that Marty hadn't gone home but had spent the night kipping in the workshop (although we are still waiting for the concrete proof that you didn't).

So, how did it go? Well, OB, Morat, Smiler and Marty now have nice new headlinings covered and installed. Then there's another one done to go into one of Marty's project cars. Smiler found that the only fault with his HEVAC was a dead LH blower but that can be explained by a burnt out fusebox and that if you turn off passive immobilisation on a very early car, it immobilises it permanently. He also spent the entire of today adjusting the tracking on Marty's car (serves you right for bringing the tracking rig). Morat continued to confirm his position as the barbecue master and kept us fed while everyone else just wandered from car to car helping out with anything that needed help with. Dina spent the whole of yesterday stripping the remains of the old headlining material off the headlining shells and preparing them for the new material to be stuck on.

Sloth spent a lot of time doing stuff (not entirely sure what but he kept himself busy) and then decided to take OB up on the offer of the use of some EAS calibration blocks. Then it all went completely wrong when we found that his front right flatly refused to move from where it was. That meant that it sat at standard height until it was let down (by pulling the airline) when it then flatly refused to lift again. A raid of Marty's stock of unknown bits, found a valve block that worked and finally, he had suspension that did what it should. Someone had obviously been playing with the calibration as when it was supposed to drop to motorway height, it was dropping the left side but raising the right!

Smiler, just noticed that your car will no longer lock on the remote. Did you get that sorted today? As the fob will need to be synced as you had the battery off yesterday.

All in all though, a pretty productive weekend even if everyone has managed to get sunburnt..

For your delectation, here are some Happy Snaps. Thanks to Photobucket now changing their commercial model (as pointed out by Sloth) they now want $300 plus for hosting. All of my previous photos now show as a silly box on the site, so screw Photobucket, I've moved to Imgur...

I thought there was a "workshop"?

There is, but Dina was in there using a wire brush to get the remains of the old headlining and foam off and getting herself covered in sticky orange foam.

Why would we rufty tufty P38 owners want to work inside the workshop, when we could do it outside and get sunstroke?

Great to put faces to some of the regular names on here, it was a very enjoyable weekend. Though I am now going to have to fit a V12 to mine to get you all back for having 2 cylinders missing this time.

Post weekend results on my P38:

Rear passengers now have increased head room due to new non-saggy head lining.
All the nasty flocked pillar trims have been replaced with less tatty later versions.
I can now open and close the sun blind on the sunroof.
Front passenger door now locks and unlocks with the rest of the central locking (thanks Marty)
No longer have to listen to the annoying beep of displeasure as the vehicle complains that the sunroof is not set (thanks again Marty, though I need to have another go at setting it as it is out of sync).
Both lower tailgate straps are now sharing the load.
SRS light has been reset.
HEVAC is only showing one issue - LH fan. This is the old fusebox issue. More importantly there are no other faults listed and the blend motors are all returning sensible values as they move.
No other fault codes stored.

The only system that didn't get looked at was the EAS.

Oh, and it has the wrong engine in it. Even if it is very smooth by smelly diesel standards (and after moving Martys 'SNOG' I'm inclined to agree but I can live with it).

So thanks to all present for all the help and a big thank you to Marty not only for the use of his workshop and for arranging the weekend but also for organising and ordering the purchase of the head-lining kits. You certainly make P38 ownership easier and a lot more viable!

Oh, and amongst his many talents Morat really is a master of the BBQ tongs!

Thanks all,

Smiler.

Just noticed in the photos, why is the DSE the only one with its bonnet open?...

To let the nasty oily smell out?

Anyway, after thrashing the VSE around the highways, byways, dirt tracks and private lanes of southern England, popped the bonnet to check for oil leaks etc and found a hairline fracture in the expansion tank. Still plenty of coolant inside and a little pink puddle under the tank.
Nuts.
EDIT- The Discovery tank has the same part number, and I know exactly where I could have found one at Summer Camp- doh!
